I take care of about a half-dozen strays. The one I call Smudge seems to have a
bad upper respiratory infection. His nose is all stuffed and crusted, he is
breathing through his mouth, and there’s a bad smell (I think the infection). I
cleaned up his nose and gave him 50 mg of amoxicillin. He’s a kitten (about 6
months old) and weights about 5 lbs. I plan on giving him another 50 in the
morning before I leave for work. The pills were originally for his sister who
was spayed last week and has been impossible to catch. Has anyone had
experience with this, and am I on the right track? I will probably call my
regular vet tomorrow for advice; they are not in today, and the pet ER is very
expensive. I can take him to my regular vet if necessary but hope to avoid the
ER. Thanks in advance for any insight!
You’ve probably done the best you can.
If it’s a bacterial infection, the amoxicillin will be very helpful. If it’s non-bacterial, it still won’t hurt him. And the cleaning his nose will help him feel better. Watch to see that he is drinking enough – giving him an eyedropper full of water every few hours might be a good precaution. Then do call your vet Monday morning.
And do try hard to catch his sister. She really should have that amoxicillin after her surgery.
Thanks very much! I will call my vet in the morning. Fingers crossed…
