Side 1:Side 2 (Cassette Tapes)

In this thread:Cassette Tape Question

it is mentioned that cassette tape has a shiny side and a dull side, and only the dull site contains recorded magnetic information

How does a cassette have a side 1 and a side 2 then?

Think of the tape as a two lane highway. Lets assume you are holding the cassette vertically looking at the tape itself. Side 1 uses half of the shiny side (left half for arguements sake) and side 2 uses the right half.

This allowed me to play a fun joke on one of my friends a long time ago:

I remounted the audio head in my friend’s cassette player, placing several small washers between the head & the chassis. This resulted in the head sitting about 1/16[sup]th[/sup] of an inch further out than normal, enabling the machine to read the opposite side of whatever tape was played. Because the opposite side of the tape plays back in the opposite direction, not only did the wrong side of the tape play, but it played backwards. I hope he was stoned when he discovered it.

Shortly thereafter, I began to use my powers only for good.
