Side terminals on car batteries: access

I have a yard customer who drives a '93 Cadillac. The battery went dead a few nights ago; the Auto Club guy came and had a really hard time hooking up his jumper cables to the woman’s car. I went to a local car parts store–Pep Boys–and asked for side-terminal extenders, metal attachments that stick upwards and make it easier to connect jumper cables. Pep Boys apparently no longer stocks them. Is there another place to find them in Los Angeles County? Or is this no longer, somehow, an inconvenient situation for people whosoe cars have side-terminal batteries?

I’ve seen them at K-mart and Wall-mart. You might try there.
IMHO, a better solution is to remove the bolts from the terminal connectors, run a nut down a 5/16-18 bolt, insert the whole thing through the connector and into the terminal and tighten the terminal using the nut. The top part of the bolt will protrude through the terminal connector and provide a convenient place for jumper connections. You can also cut the head off the bolt and connect more accessories using more nuts (be sure to install a fusible link). This method has the advantage over the terminal extenders because 1)you keep the original terminal connectors, and 2) you can adjust the length of the protruding bolt to fit the available room under the hood (it’s also cheaper).

if you do that make sure the nuts and bolts and washers are all stainless, otherwise they will corrode in no time

Chrome or zinc plating should be fine (do go w/ the stainless if they are available).
Also, a thin coat of grease will do wonders to reduce corrosion on any battery connection.

Yeah, right, I have a bevy of time cleaning that oil off in order to get a proper battery connection. But there are products that do a better job.

rag, solvent.

You make the connection first.

What you got? Take it to Detroit. They’ve been using grease or wax for decades. You could be a rich man.

If you absolutely had to find something wrong with my post, why didn’t you simply point out that it would take a 3/8"-16 bolt instead of 5/16"-18?

Thanx
