Signing your name

Why is enjoy seen as a bit sad? Say I open up a thread in Cafe Society about a movie Ive seen and decide to review it, and I finish up the post by saying “Anyway, Enjoy!, Delly” Does that make me sad? Because of the simple wish that I hope others enjoy the movie?

And, if the OP had searched for this topic, they would find that there was a pit thread about this not too long ago, and it turned into the same thing, people signing their posts.

Regards,
Enjoy,

Sometimes I put my name at the end to indicate why the hell you should bother paying attention to my line of bullshit - uh, I mean my expert advice.

  • sturmhauke, former EA/Maxis and Sony PlayStation tech support dude

  • sturmhauke, deposed Overlord of the Known Universe

  • sturmhauke, Professional Crastinator

  • sturmhauke, Treasurer and Armsmaster of the Geek Club

  • sturmhauke, Slackmaster

No, not at all. I meant signing every single post “Enjoy!” or “Regards”. That’s all.

Why do I sign my name after every post?

Well, firstly some of my posts can be very long. As such, some people may not remember who it is that was speaking. Rather than make them scroll all the way up to the top again, I simply sign my name to the bottom.

Secondly, as others have mentioned, it’s a holdover from Usenet. I came here as a Usenet refugee and as I did there (sign my name after every post), so too I do here.

Lastly, I tend to be more on the formal side. As such, as with any communication, I attach my name to the end of it.

And now, because I am also a trouble-maker…

Here are some interesting questions frot he OP that I’d like answered(after carefully considering the subject):

  • When you author an E-mail, do you sign your name to it?

  • When sending professional communications of any sort, do you sign your name to it?

  • When Usenet posting, do you do the same?

  • When you leave a note for someone, do you sign it?

The reason I ask is that most of the above items have your name at the top, yet we always sign our names to them. I NEVER send an E-mail, usenet postiing, or professional communication of any sort without properly identifying myself at the end, despite by name most likely being at the top or my E-mail address appearing.

What do you do to avoid redundancy in these situations while trying to be conventional or professional?

I do that!

Habit in part. It was a common convention where and when I first started being active online and it is also a holdover from RL writing.

But I also continue to do it because I am so used to it, it bugs me visually when I have experimented with leaving it off :).

I think it’s the same with me - I think of the boards like an email, I guess, and it just doesn’t feel right not to sign - like there is something missing.
