What’s up with that?

-Blowero

I think it first started around October, 2000.

Is it even possible for you to find something more petty to bitch about?

Hahahaha…thanks for the laugh, Blowero. I needed that. I’m currently engaging in a rather fiesty Pit hijack that’s spun out of control, and a little bit of levity always helps to cool my jets a bit.

As for signing your username to posts, I couldn’t tell you. Maybe it’s the same phenomenon that leads people to

[quote the entire OP]
(http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=250670) in the first response. Of course, some people have their own signature closing that includes their username, too. I know Shodan likes to give his regards. I tend to take the same path as Left Hand of Dorkness and conclude my little pearls of wisdom with my real name, though I do this mostly to avoid having people confuse me with the real Roland Orzabal. While I’d like to think he’d agree with my statements, I shouldn’t presume to speak for him  . Maybe one of the principal offenders can shed a little light on the issue for us. I’ll be checking in to see what people come up with.

(who is not Roland Orzabal, in case you missed that part  )

It is just stupid repetition. Just like all those stupid “signatures” - I mean what is worth repeating every time you say something. Not those signatures for sure.

If these people were talking, well, somebody would tell them to shut up about the second time they repeated one of those things, if anybody was paying attention to them in the first place.

For me, in part, it’s a holdover from Usenet, where (especially with earlier newsreaders) your name was buried in a mass of header jumble and it made conversation easier.

Plus, I see this as writing (as in “writing letters”) as opposed to talking and one signs one’s name at the end of a letter, even though it should be right up there at the top too.

Fenris

Dunno what you mean exactly, please clarify?

(Hey, it’s early, I just got up, I can be forgiven a little stupidity.)

Try thinking of it more like a T-shirt slogan. For that matter, some sigs ARE worth repeating - WWJD might be annoying, but I can’t argue people ever don’t need reminding.

This is why I prefer message boards to Usenet nowadays – on Usenet there’s nobody who can ban morons like this.

Can’t say it’s ever bothered me, despite the obvious redundancy. From “Yer pal, Satan” to “Regards, Shodan”, such closings have been part of many posters’ personal style. I can’t see a problem here.

Buwahahahahaha! You complain about it, then you do it! Now that’s hilarity! You’re madcap!

I find your no sig sig even more annoying.

Somehow, I find your post particularly satisfying on this fine morning.

Just so you know, you can turn off sigs in your User CP. I never see anyone’s sig unless I click on their profile and read it there.

It doesn’t bother me.

Regards,
Shodan

I agree with Mr Firefly. Personal style. I like that. Especially closings like Shodan’s “Regards” or or mgtman’s “Enjoy” or Aldebaran’s “Salaam.” I only occasionally use it myself (perhaps because I have no personal stlye), and then only in threads where my professional credentials are somehow relevant.

-zut, Ponderer of Enormities

I like it.

Sometimes, when I read a long, insightful post, I find myself scrolling back up to see who has bestowed these pearls of wisdom upon us. (And likewise if I read a long, unpleasant one.)

When people put their name at the bottom, it saves me scrolling.

I got into the habit on another board where I’m a much more prolific poster. I started doing it when people starting asking if there was something they could use that was quicker to type the “D.E.S.K.Top668” so I started ending my posts with “DESK”. It looked too cold so I changed to “Peace - DESK”. It carried over to the SDMB. I don’t just put as a sig line because I occasionally use others (most often here, “Thanks in advance - DESK”)

Peace - DESK

I agree, don’t forget Kabbe’s “Pan” either, or Kniz and his…
Kniz!

A few pit threads were even started over that one, heh.

I think there was one thread at this very special BBQ thing to “attack” me for signing my posts with wishing the readers peace.
(I must say that was the most boring thread ever dedicated to my shining presence on this message board.)

As for my signature: What you see is what you get

Salaam. A
