Silent Sam is down!

If it goes back up , it will be indoors where they can lock it up at night. That will be the compromise. UNC is scared of losing tax money to simply let it stay down. As it is the NC GOP thinks UNC is a bunch of liberals so they will gladly cut their funding.

Why is the university in the law enforcement business? That’s the police’s job. And is this a thread about rape? We aren’t in this thread complaining about the socialist government in Venezuela creating such bad conditions that people are chowing down on some donkey. We aren’t complaining about global warming in this thread either. Must not be a problem.

Seriously, what kind of crazy world would it be where a college campus would have a police force? What would you call them? “Campus police”?

Ha, ha! It is to laugh!

Have you ever met a UNC campus cop?

Indeed, it is to laugh.

Poor, sheltered child. Guards in schools are the rule. The stupid exception is, for some reason, being maintained.

Beg pardon?

Whoosh!

Yeah. Folks, I grew up in Chapel Hill. That was a joke.

The plan is a brand new building just for Sam, still at UNC.

That’s going to go over really well.

The GOP who now runs NC will punish UNC , likely by witholding funds if he does not go back up.

Isn’t the governor now a Democrat?

yes Gov. is a Dem but he has very little power and he has no power over the state budget except to veto it.

I should note the location they picked for the new building is far from the center of campus , not near very many academic buildings. I’m sure that location was picked on purpose to minimize the building

The protesters seem to have won a Pyrrhic victory.

I wonder how much money they are willing to spend to keep this piece of racist crap around. I mean, after someone burns the new building to the ground, will they keep rebuilding it?

ETA: would police shoot and kill someone who tried to enter the building to vandalize it? Would they pay that price to keep it around? Exactly how much is this worth to the NC racists?

this idea is far from a done deal. The UNC system Board of Governors is 100% GOP controlled and they may not approve it. I would give about 50/50 that they agree.

Not at all.

First, the statue was in the second-most-central location on campus (the first most central location being the Pit). It was just about impossible to walk across campus without seeing the statue. Now it’s gonna be indoors in a remote location. That’s a victory, full stop.

Second, if the GOP withholds money from UNC–well, you may be underestimating how popular UNC is. There is tremendous, TREMENDOUS pride in our flagship university, and it crosses lines of both party and class. Plenty of very wealthy Tarheels graduated from UNC-CH, and would be pissed as hell to see the university suffer financially because of partisan games. NC’s GOP are plenty of things, but I’ve never called them stupid. They’re far too cunning to punish the university itself.

The Democratic governor will now be able to reasonably oppose and even veto spending for that new facility on the grounds that it’s partisan pork.

the GOP removed money from the UNC law school ($500k) recently.

I believe that money was earmarked for a specific, criminal defense initiative that Republicans object to. It was absolutely bogus, but was far different from removing general funding.

Depending how you look at at things, Odum Village is in some sense not a remote part of campus. It’s like 1000 feet from the Dean Dome which is the only part of campus some people (not students) ever see.
