Silly Oldies that Never Get Radio Play Anymore

I recently introduced my wife to this song. She rolled her big beautiful eyes but I caught her grinning just the same. Do you remember a different version of this song on the “The Groovy Ghoulies Show” from the 1970s?

Speaking of the Curly Shuffle, I know at the end that there is a snippet from one of the old theme songs used by the Three Stooges but it’s NOT Three Blind Mice. Does anybody know the name of that particular song used as a theme by the Stooges?

Some old songs that I haven’t heard in ages:

Little Bit Late by Lewie Wickham
Yakety Sax by Boots Randolph
The Cockroach That Ate Cincinnati by Rose and the Arrangement
Green Door
Everybody Loves Saturday Night by New Christy Minstrels
Up With People by Up With People (remember that one?)
It’s Gas (a Dr. Demento classic)
and one from Dean Martin: “Lay Some Happiness On Me”

My paternal family considers pointless debate (where all sides are actually in agreement or it is simply impossible to reach an agreement) to be a perfectly fine exercise in logic and a fun “bonding experience”. After that song was played in Radio 3’ Country Music program while we were in the car, Littlebro and I spent a couple of hours trying to decide whether it would be Way Back Then Beer, current brand, the first beer ever, a sampler of The Finest Beers in History, country/ies of provenance…

Those songs are great for stuff like that.

Oh God. Oh God. They sang it at my junior high graduation. I’ve been trying so hard to forget . . .

Yesterday I heard Ringo Starr’s No No Song on the radio. It’s been decades.

Hiow doo yoo fiiell?

Star Trekkin’ always cracks me up. When we drove across country, any time there was a dork driver ahead of me, someone in the car would start singing, “There’s… Klingons on the starboard bow, starboard bow, starboard bow…”

The Witch Doctor by Alvin and the Chipmunks

Ooo eee, ooo ah ah ting tang
Walla walla, bing bang
Ooo eee, ooo ah ah ting tang
Walla walla, bing bang…
Ooo eee, ooo ah ah ting tang
Walla walla, bing bang
Ooo eee, ooo ah ah ting tang
Walla walla, bing bang

I shouldn’t admit it, but I have many of these on my Ipod. I dated Ray Stevens’ daughter in high school, the height of his popularity, so I have everything **he **ever recorded. He actually introduced me to Allan Sherman back then, and I think I have everything he did as well.

I grew up with Dr. Demento, and he was the only one brave/foolish enough to play many of these wonderful hits! And I too know all the words to the entire Snoopy/Royal Guardsmen album.

and…

Pencil Neck Geek - Freddy Blassie
Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald - Gordon Lightfoot
The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde - Georgie Flame
Alice’s Restaurant - Arlo Guthrie
Along Came Jones - The Coasters
Basketball Jones - Cheech & Chong
Pretty much anything by Cheech & Chong
Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow - Frank Zappa
Muskrat Love - Captain and Tenille
Who Put the Benzedrine in Mrs. Murphy’s Ovaltine - Harry Gibson

oh, there’s so many more out there…

I would love to know exactly what is silly about “Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald”.

I attempt this one occasionally at karaoke (though not many KJs are eclectic enough to carry the track). I’ll probably never get it down perfectly, but it’s fun to see how close I can get.

Not really oldies, since they’re from the 90s, but you guys just reminded me of “I’m Too Sexy” by Right Said Fred, and the immortal Lambada by Kaoma.

So check out this video from 1982: Captain Sensible - Wot*
Then check out this video from 1982: Alexei Sayle - Ullo John Got A New Motor

Then compare it with this video from 1983: Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

*Most sampled bass line ever.

When I was young, I had an ex that would periodically sing that. Hard to believe that didn’t work out.

Just for fun, I went through my big daily random-listening playlist to see what you guys suggested that I listen to regularly.
Hello It’s Me- Todd Rundgren
Winchester Cathedral
Coconut- Harry Nilsson
Timothy- The Buoys
Earache my eye - Cheech & Chong (someone said, "Anything by C&C)

My suggestions, also from my big random-listening daily playlist:
Political Science- Randy Newman
*Conditional-release/Don’t try to lay no Boogie-Woogie on the King of Rock & Roll- John Baldry
*Washington Square- The Village Stompers
Long Tall Glasses- Leo Sayer
Wet Dream & Captain of the Sofa Team- Kip Addotta
Oh Babe What Would You Say?- Hurricane Smith
*Might not have had much radio airplay to start with.

Maybe not silly, but it’s a bit ponderous and pompous after a few dozen listens.

Which diminishes the story and magnificent telling, none.

Err, yeah, I gots around a hundred Dr. D. standards on my phone… and while I haven’t been able to listen to a Dr. Demento show in more than a decade, I have spun my own platters for the kids, who have taught their classmates the lyrics to many a fine old weirdie. “They… Live…”

A couple of nitpicks: That song is credited to David Seville; it predates his creation of the Chipmunks. Also, just a few weeks ago I heard this song (it often gets played around Hallowe’en) and for the first time in my life realized that, in the chorus, they sing “bing bang” the first time and “bang bang” the second.

There’s also a version by Sha Na Na with Bowser singing lead.

“The Ballad of Irving” - from When You’re In Love, The Whole World Is Jewish (which I actually own a copy of)
