It’s fun and worth picking up. You can always check out gameplay videos on youtube. Lots of cool features.
Downside is yes there are problems. The main problem seems to be traffic management. The cars want to use only one lane, for some reason, so as the city grows, traffic jams are abundant.
I don’t have any. Even when the city was a third of its present size, industrial buildings were abandoned in droves because there weren’t enough workers, so I buldozed it all. I managed to supply the demand for commercial goods with outside cargo connections, but I don’t understand why that’s not working now.
I found pedestrian paths and public transportation to be the keys to getting workers to industrial zones.
My first stable city (haven’t played in a while but I think it topped out at 92K) has a very long riverside agricultural area. Abandoned buildings continually popped up there until I built a riverfront pedestrian path with train stations connected to the rest of the city at either end.
South of there is a small agricultural area, also near the river. Same problem with abandoned buildings. Laid two parallel pedestrian paths from the surrounding houses through there and its own train station nearby.
The entire city has several bus lines and a new metro.
Anyone created any buildings yet? I’ve found it easy to make parks, but apparently I need to learn to use another program to make the Pho King restaurant my city desperately needs.
I keep getting a message that my city needs an outside connection. It’s connected already via highways, train, airport, and both kinds of shipyards.
My citizens support five donut shops per block. I had to take the Moe’s Bar building mod out, as they were popping up everywhere.
My favorite mod residence someone made is a high-rise that has trees on rounded terraces. For some reason, people hang out on the roof and randomly shoot up into the air.
I am not entirely sure how we updated it. It might be as simple as loading the game. Check to see if you have the three new European starter maps (Cliffside Bay, Foggy Hills and Grand River). You’ll need to start a new map and pick one of those to see the European buildings. Check out the link, as there is a lot more information there.
I haven’t been able to test the update yet. There are a few mods to help with traffic, though, and since the update Traffic++ and Traffic manager are now compatible with each other, but I don’t have any downloaded mods so I am not sure what that entails, unfortunately.
I’m going to start my second city after not playing for a month. Traffic++ and traffic manager have a whole lot of the things I really wanted to start with - any other essential gameplay mods before I begin?
Here are some useful mods with links, with the caveat that these posts were written during the first and second weeks, respectively, so it might be out of date. Also this is just some random person’s list…
There’s also an autosave mod and a nopillars mod to help you place objects more easily. However, the nopillars mod is also a huge culprit for bug posts which show up on the Reddit page, so be careful. Finally I would also mention that the latest update means some mods won’t work for now - not all of them were tested before the update was released.
Thanks for mentioning this update. I never see these things. Maybe the game auto-updates any time my son opens Steam to play his FPS games. I only let myself go near Cities once every few weeks, because it sucks me in for hours.
Alright, so I fire up the game after not playing for 6 weeks or so, and the loading times are unusually long, and I look at task manager - the game is taking up 6gb of memory usage.
What I suspect is that some old mod or asset was broken by the patch in a way that causes a memory leak. However, as far as I can see, there’s no way to see what computer resources each mod or asset is taking up, right? So is there some way to tell why the game is so bloated now except to manually de-activate hundreds of assets to see which one is at fault?
If it is an asset, that’s a question you might want to pose at the Paradox forums, to see if there are any old assets that are known memory hogs after the update.
I think there’s a limit to how many assets and mods you can subscribe to but it’s based on your computer specs. See here for someone else’s thoughts on it. That thread also linked to a thread which discussed a way to remove up to 30 assets at a time (a generic Steam action, not so much tied to Skylines) which you can find over here.
Also, many mods need to be updated to work properly with the new patch. To test if that’s the issue: In Steam right-click on this game and choose Properties. Click on Set Launch Options, and paste this in there:
-noWorkshop -disableMods
I see a new expansion is out. After Dark adds a day/night cycle with adjusted traffic patterns and zone efficiency adjusted accordingly. Plus new specializations for Commercial zones: Leisure (which becomes more active at night) and Tourist (bars & restaurants; seaside zones also get marinas, fishing tours, and beaches).
