I had a problem as well. I tried a cople of variants and then this one went through. Maybe it’s an intermittent thing. I know I saw the problem mentioned before, where people say you can’t get the name you want and then you check and can’t find anyone with that name. As you yourself mentioned, CGI software isn’t perfect, especially multiple linked html pages. Lots of times just reading these pages I have to skip past coing errors detected by the browser. Lots of times all errors are routed to one message, so that an incomplete page transmission is simply assumed to be the single error, in this case that the name was previously taken.
Have you actually changed your name now? Or have you aquired a second account?
We’ll give you another name, no problem.
We’d do this for any member that wanted a name change, as long as they’re not asking real often. Names are not be changed like this season’s hats, names have meaning.
But sure, send me an email with your new name and I’ll slap it on you.

Just FWIW,
I joined in May of 1999 with the user name opus. Shortly after there was (and still is) an Opus1 who joined in April of 2000. I changed my handle in late 2000 (for unrelated reasons) so there was a good 8 or 9 months where both opus and Opus1 peacefully coexisted, often posting in the same threads. Nobody ever asked either of us change our names.

This thread is difficult to follow, because there are several quotes from non-existent posts. I’m assuming that this is because one or more posters revealed themselves to be socks in the thread and were subsequently banned and their posts were “disappeared.”
Also it reads funny because at least one poster changed his name during the course of the thread.
