That is PCRM propaganda, they are animal rights folks and want everyone to eat a vegetarian diet. Dr. Atkins was a healthy weight at the time of his fall, he gained 60 lbs in the hospital before the time of his death from fluid retention. His heart condition was related to a viral condition, not his diet.
An easy meal I really like is Italian sausage with chopped onions and peppers. Look around for sausage that doesn’t have added corn syrup. I need to go to a butcher (not the grocery store) to find this. Serve with a salad.
Another meal I eat often is a bunch of veggies chopped and stir fried, with a chicken breast. I like that without the meat too, I love crisp cooked veggies.
Some people (me included) lose the big appetite when in ketosis, and are satisfied with smaller meals. My sister-in-law does very well in trying to accomodate me and my Atkis eating, but she overdoes the amount of food. I am happy with smaller portions, and two courses (salad and entree, smallish servings) are fine for me.
Not wanting to hijack Scarlett67’s too much but I’ve heard that this info was put out there by a group that advocate veggy/vegan ways who are sponsored by PETA. Atkins was ~170-190lbs on admittance to hospital after his fall and the weight gain during the coma was due to water retention etc. His heart condition was cardiomyopathy which was is caused by a viral infection. So while it may be a “fact” that the man was clinically obese at the time of his death you may want to look at the circumstances behind the “facts”
The Griffin, if you’re basing this assumption on the BBC Horizon programme, I’m afraid that you’re misinformed: the program was fatally flawed in so many sensationalist and unscientific ways.
Well, we never did cook a meal last night; it was pretty late by the time we finished our project, and my friend just wanted to go home.
I appreciate everyone’s meal suggestions, and as I said earlier, I’ll keep them in mind for later. But if this is going to devolve into a thread defending Atkins, I’d prefer that that discussion be taken elsewhere. Thanks.
Can you inform me of how it was fatally flawed, in particular the bit at the end about the diet test in Denmark where one group had a healthy high protein diet.
I genuinely believe the high protein thing is the key and have done since before the Horizon programme.
Also, the high animal fat of Atkins is not good for you long term. I think you shall see this proved in future.
And finally the vegetarians/vegans thing. Well i’m not one of those, I eat a lot of lean meat. You can get a high protein diet without eating lots of fatty stuff. I would suggest if you really want to do Atkins, eat lots of nuts like walnuts and cashew nuts and brazil nuts. That will give you plenty of healthy fat
In order not to hijack this thread any further, my objections are detailed in this thread over at NADS. You’re most welcome to join us and we can argue about it there!
Why do people continue to insist that Atkins is a high animal fat diet? Have you read the book? Do you actually know what the diet is about? It’s about whole foods, natural foods. Lean meats and lots of fresh veggies, and plenty of water.
Yes, it’s high in protein. Yes, it’s low in carbs. If you’re doing it correctly, it’s NOT high in animal fats. :smack:
False. In fact, Dr. Robert Atkins, who was 6 feet tall, weighed less than 200 pounds when he was admitted to the hospital in a coma after injuring his head in a fall on ice. Dr. Stuart Trager:
The OP has a point, y’know. Thread drift is understandable–heck, this place elevates it to an art form–but please try to keep responses at least fairly specific to the OP’s intent.
You’ll appreciate it when *you’re * the OP, and it’ll help browsers know what threads actually contain.
No biggie, folks, just a little housekeeping note.
