A very fun episode- reminded me a lot of a classic episode. When I first heard the premise of this episode, I was curious as to how they were going to pull off Homer winning a million dollars- the Simpsons are always in dire financial straits. But the way that they did it was both plausible and ended in a manner that put the Simpsons back in their poor financial straits at the end. The subplot with the Funtendo Zii didn’t have much to it, but I did like the play on the Wiis-for-the-elderly craze and how it made the seniors actually sane for once. But by far my most favorite gag in the episode was the unveiling of the winner of the 20th-anniversary Create-a-new-Simpsons-character contest, Ricardo Bomba…who is promptly killed off in his first appearance. It’s such a typical Simpsons gag to announce a contest to create a new character and then kill off the winning character in his first appearance, but I still wasn’t expecting it. Much like MAD magazine, The Simpsons never takes itself seriously even when celebrating itself or holding a contest, and this is just more proof and is wonderful.
Did anyone catch the name of the couple being married?
I thought it was a so-so episode. The best gag for me was when Lisa discovered the symphony tickets in her saxa-ma-phone, and immediately after that Bart discovered a bottle of allergy medicine.
Valerie and Dave Takasaki-Rothman
Is Hitler’s baseball still for sale?
I cracked up when Homer started screeching along to Emerson Lake and Palmer just like I do, and when he broke his arm trying to get the money out of the tree and was trying to explain to Bart what was going on. This was the first episode in a really long time that I actually laughed out loud at.
Ha! I heard right. My last name *did *get mentioned!
Your last name is Takasaki-Rothman?
♫♪ Spider-Pig, Spider-Pig ♫♪
I was really amused that the lottery ticket line was so slow that Homer was able to learn enough Spanish to converse with Bumblebee Man. I also liked Bart bouncing Homer around like a basketball in the zero-gee plane and Homer and Bart propelling themselves along the fuselage with their belches.
Takasaki. Before we changed it.
The belching thing was a reference to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory where Charlie and his grandfather had to start belching to avoid floating up into some giant fan blades.
I totally missed that reference. I was thinking it was more like 2001 or something with the Zero G.
Good episode but I missed the first five or so minutes so I didn’t catch the wedding scene and Homer winning the lotto.
My daughter’s a diehard Coldplay fan and was a tad disappointed at how they used Chris Martin in a throwaway gag. She was waiting for this episode for months! I had to explain to her about ELP and synthethizers in the 70s.
Still, it was a fun episode.
I just wonder how Peggy Black of Orange, CT feels about her winning character being killed off before he even got a chance to finish his winning catchphrase.
I must’ve totally missed this. When did it happen? ![]()
The guy who was moving to Springfield to begin his new life and crashed his car into the rock wall as Homer crashed through the guardrail above him.
…and it was repeated over the closing logo.
My wife – who only started watching “The Simpsons” when we were married 3 years ago (and for that reason can’t understand my affection for the show and what it once was), laughed more at this one than any she’d seen.
It was just straight out witty all the way through. My favorite part was when Moe showed up demanding his share
I was really hoping for a Tonight Show-related chalkboard gag! Maybe next week. Other than that I found this was a good episode. My first reaction was similar to mobo85’s with regard to the family’s perpetual money problems, but I was won over by the gags in the first act, especially the ones at and about the wedding.
Minor point: I think this is the first time we’ve heard that the Kwik-E-Mart is on Orchard Avenue.
Uncharacteristically tender ending.
