Every once in a while, The Simpsons will give a screen acknowledgement of someone who recently died who either was part of the show (Phil Hartman) or a celebrity guest (Linda McCartney). A screen capture of their animated self is used and a brief “In Memory of…” (or something to that effect) caption.

Does anyone know when they began doing this? Who else has received a tribute in this fashion? I own the Season 2 DVDs and there are no examples of this; did the practice start later, or did they just not include them in the DVD?

I think it was first done for the lady who played Lunch Lady Doris.

I don’t think any of the guest star voices had died by the end of season 2 (Audrey Meadows, maybe? When did she die?)

Duh, you’re probably right on that count.

And Doris Grau died in 1995 (the show premiered in 1989, IIRC).
