Simpsons Production Numbers

I don’t understand the episode numbers (or are they production numbers?) given to Simpsons episodes. For example, http://www.snpp.com/guides/ql.html mentions the following:[ul]
[li]MG01[/li][li]7G08[/li][li]7F03[/li][li]8F24[/li][li]1F22[/li][li]AABF01[/li][li]BABF21[/li][li]EABF06[/li][/ul]Huh? The final two digits seem to be a sequence number, but what’s the rest?

They’re production numbers. The last two numbers represent the order of production for that year. The first numbers don’t really mean anything.

The first example you give, “MG01,” is just made up by the fans. The Tracy Ullman shorts don’t really have production codes, so the fans use these (“MG” standing for Matt Groening).

“7Gxx” comes from Homer’s workplace of Sector 7-G. The rest don’t really mean anything. They went to 7Fxx, 8Fxx, etc. but skipped 5Fxx, and went to a new numbering system. AABFxx, BABFxx, etc.

These codes appear in the credits in the copyright notice:
