While there has been much (intentional) misinformation regarding which state Springfield is located, here is my guess:
In the Simpsons , Springfield is actually located in Massachussets. Note-- on the ocean (port springfield is in several ep’s), the Qimby’s = Kennedy’s (including the accent and criminal antics of the Qimby offspring “chowda, chowda- I’ll kill you”), town is a smelly dump, filled with idiots, which speaks in a strange made up words (“its perfectly cromulent”), just like the real Springfield Mass, and it was invovled in the Revolutionary War (“Fort Sensible”). Easy to figure out if you think about it. Of course there is just as much evidence planted against this, but I choose to ignore any inconvient facts, Homer-style.
Ok, whats your guess and any supporting facts if you have, if any. Love the Lisa crack about Springfield’s location in this week’s episode (which was pretty good, IMHO). -me
Well… deep down I know that the Simpsons Springfield does not exist in our reality…btt…If I did have to pick a state I would also say Massachusetts for the reasons mentioned by elf6c…if only for the fact that Zesty’s pizza place exists in downtown Springfield and the original is in Chelmsford, MA.

For what it’s worth, Matt Groenig grew up in the suburbs of Portland, Oregon, and he probably had his old neighbohod in mind when he created Springfield.
However, there’s very little logic or continuity to the series. Springfield seems to have whatever characteristics the writers want it to have from week to week. If the writers want to have cowboys in Springfield (implying that it’s in the West), they’ll have cowboys. But, if, the following week, they want to show Minutemen fighting in Colonial Springfield (implying it’s in New England), they’ll do that too, and they won’t worry a whit about the contradictions beteen the two shows.
Springfield isn’t supposed to be real place in a real state. It’s just a generic, suburban American town…not unlike the Springfield that Beaver Cleaver lived in.
Well, except Springfield was Confederate in the Civil War. (The teacher’s strike episode, where there’s a reenactment of the First Bearded (Union) Infantry heroically slaughtering the Confederate army in Fort Springfield, which is treacherously trying to surrender to them.
It’s also not on either coast (from the episode where Apu becomes a citizen).
Heh heh heh, too true- there probably is no “correct” answer, much like the mystery of Lenny and Carl its all speculation.
Much like observing the old Soviet Union, its fun to try and cut through the mis-information and come up most the most likely answer. Much like Grandpa Simpson’s past which changes from time to time, all in good fun.
Still you have a good agrument for Oregon there- let it rip. After all what is Cafe Society for?
Springfield exists in a hyperspace continuum, allowing it to move to a new location each week. This hyperspace continuum has some other interesting properties as well. For instance, it travels backwards in time between each episode, which is why the characters never get any older.
If the creators of the simpsons are consistent then there is a way to find out almost exactly where springfield is…
In one of the Treehouse of horror episodes maggie’s dummy (passifier I believe it’s called in murka) acts as a transmitting/recieving device to the aliens. To signify this the cartoonists draw ever-decreasing circles on a map of the USA which eventually lead to one spot.
Now if you get a screenshot of that scene, superimpose a picture of the USA with state lines on it over it. then it will show which state maggie was in when she transmitted. And therefore the likely state in which springfield is!
In the comet episode, they said there was only “one bridge out of town” … They are by an ocean, because when Homer stole Burnsy’s yacht, he took it out into international waters … when Homer went out to die working at the oil dereks, that was in “East Springfield” (I think, can’t remember exactly), which they define as being “2/3 the size of Texas” … their radio station is KBBL, which indicates that they are west of the Mississippi river.
Well, throughout the years, the writers have added so many contradictory elements to Springfield’s geography, that not only does it not exist, it COULD NOT exist.
That being said, it’s either in Texas or North Carolina.
Say, that reminds me, are there any other TV shows or even movies that still have people guessing about it’s “location”? I’m curious now.
NT=North Tennessee=Kentucky. It’s settled
Springfield, KY is near a Shelbyville, KY also. The state is old enough to be involved in the revolution but new enough that people would head west for it after misinterpreting a passage in the Bible.
But don’t forget that West Springfield is three times the size of Texas . . . meaning that Alaska is the only state that will work. (But Alaska isn’t allowed either.)
