As others have noted, O’Connor is a talented musician who had a terrible childhood and has suffered from mental health issues. I too hope she finds some peace, although it is likely that this is just the next of an ongoing series of life changes. Some people simply never find the peace they seek.
Indeed, who of us, in our late-thirties, has not publicly supported the death of an author charged with blasphemy, and then claimed we were just joking around.
That’s defining “saying stupid stuff” rather narrowly. I’ve certainly said and written things I’d desperately love to go back and erase, and some of them have been quite hurtful even if unintentionally. If you haven’t, then you’re doing surprisingly well.
It’s the standard “This time I’ve found the truth” statement one expects from chronic faith hoppers. If and when she eventually swaps to Jainism or Zen Buddhism or Pastafarianism, she’ll say something similar again.
Same here. I’ve seen her perform twice, once when she was nine-months pregnant, and she gave pure, perfect, unforgettable shows each time. She clearly loved performing for people. It’s a shame especially since it seems many of her demons are rooted in abuse.
Dylan recorded a really good Christian album. Slow Train Coming is one of my favorite albums. He won a Grammy for Gotta Serve Somebody. I wore out my vinyl copy and have the cd ripped to my phone.
Maybe Sinead and Yusuf Islam will do an album together. That would be a trip making those two styles work on one album.
It should be, but emotionally disturbed people with mental illness sometimes throw themselves headfirst into religion looking for peace of mind and salvation.
We hear about the cases where it doesn’t work out. We seldom hear of the folks who find some balance in their lives as a result and who go on to live less unhappily.
Even so, I must resist rolling my eyes when I hear of a person going serially from one faith/idea/cause to another, looking for the truth. I should really just wish them all the best, and as long as their new cause isn’t trying to regulate my life, I hope they find peace.
One reason: O’Connor has a consistent history of maintaining liberal and unorthodox views, no matter what organization she joins. Liberal unorthodox modern Islam is… hmmmm… What’s the word I’m looking for?
