Sinead O'Connor is now Muslim

This is such unsurprising news that I checked the time/date stamp of the OP to see if this was a zombie thread.

Me, too. And I mean that sincerely. But with her life like a ball in a religious/spiritual/whatever pinball machine, all I can do is shake my head.

She’s been all over the news and social media in recent years for bizarre behavior, mental breakdowns, her posts on anal sex, weird marriages, living in random hotels, etc. Personally, I wouldn’t even consider what she did decades ago “stupid” but what she’s done since she left the limelight is sort of stay in the reduced limelight with a bunch of interesting behavior.

Nizari?

And maybe the Turks.

It could happen. She’s apparently an admirer of his work as she’s often been heard to say that nothing compares to Yu.

Reported.

I’m not sure if it’s possible to understand, unless you have experienced the horror of sick abusive parents from infancy. But if you’d really like to know, you can watch this. She is an incredibly brave woman who shared her pain publicly in the hopes of helping others.

It’s a hellish thing to be unable to stop loving the person who tortured you.

I met her once, in a very minor and inconsequential way, back around 1993/1994. She was one of many musicians staying at the hotel I worked for when the WOMAD tour stopped in our city. Part of my job at the time was to make sure all the tour guests had received their luggage. Outside her hotel door she had left a handwritten note saying (paraphrased) “Thank you for bringing me my bags!” with various happy face drawings. Later that day, I saw her several times in the hotel lobby and around the property She seemed happy, almost childlike, about being in a hotel. Hard to describe other than to say she was bubbly, running around checking out the property smiling and talking to everyone, and she was very kind to everyone she passed.

Over the years I’ve seen all the various stories that have come out related to her childhood and her subsequent mental health issues and challenges. Every time I think back to that younger woman who seemed so very happy and I say a small prayer/blessing that she finds some of that joy again. She really was delightful that day.

The thought of her joining the Asāsīyūn rather amuses me.

Children can be so cruel.

I had been under the impression that he had apologized for his previous statements, but if he’s still trying to argue (and I know that article is from three years ago) that “I didn’t support the fatwa but hey, the law says blasphemy is punishable by death so whatchu gonna do?” then he’s a waffling idiot.

Still like his music though.

Sinéad O’Connor Says She Never Wants to ‘Spend Time with White People Again’ (warning, autoplay video)

No, that is not what they’re called.

This guy gets it.

She better hope she doesn’t lose her faith in Islam, because tearing up an image of Mohammed on SNL might get a slightly different reaction from the faithful than tearing up a picture of the Pope.

That, and she kinda burned that “White People” bridge pretty good.

Clearly you don’t recall what happened to her after that. Blacklists, death threats,
strangers spitting on her in public, it was a nightmare.

And clearly you don’t recall what happened to a French magazine that published some cartoons featuring Mohammed.

there is a better chance of her getting hit by lightning than getting on SNL again

Salman Rushdie would like a word with you about the costs of insulting Islam. I don’t recall Sinead having to live in hiding for years.

We could ask Theo Van Gogh, except his ‘slander’ of the prophet got him stabbed multiple times in the chest and he’s no longer with us.
