Sing us a story: Orchestrating a narrative through remixing disparate artists

Now every time is officially story time on the Straight Dope! Are you a busy adult with many important things to do, and don’t have time to read? That is fine, in this thread we will be linking songs together to form a coherent meta-narrative. Don’t like the stories provided? We do requests as well!

if you can make a link to a made playlist just for the story, that would be better than just pasting each link individually here, as that would auto play the next on the list and not require us listeners to click something every 3 min. Also, rule #1 is use different artists for each music piece, just taking from one or two artists is not really creating your own unique story.

Just as a proper story has a beginning, middle, and an end, so too should our stories be at least 3 songs long, and when listened to in order, should make narrative sense. If you have a knack for writing and want to type out further flourishes to flesh out your story, great!

If you want to act the parent, you can post less information and request to have the next poster try and guess what the theme or moral of the story was before they post their own story.

If you want to test the limits of the music aficionados, request a story outline that you think might stump them!

Extra hard mode: try to make another Peter and the Wolf; no lyrics, just using the power of the pieces themselves to see if other posters can reach the same feelings/meanings as you did.

Hey there son, you remind me of myself back when I was your age… that was not a compliment. I had issues, so many untreated issues, and I am sorry that I passed them on to you… have I ever told you about how I dug myself out of my hole and met mom?

  1. Edie Brickell & New Bohemians – Circle
  2. Amber Rubarth – When Will The Spring Come
  3. The Avalanches – Frontier Psychiatrist
  4. Marina and the Diamonds – OH NO!

And after that, with much more help from family and friends, I met mom. The only thing I regret is not opening up and getting help sooner.
well that was depressing, I request a story that will lighten my mood. Something that is fun

Ok, I set up a collective channel for us on Youtube to upload our song stories to, or in general for others of the Straight Dope to use for whatever else. Under jane doesmith. to get in use threadgamess at gmail dot com the word is t1h2r3e4a5d6

A (hopefully growing!) song story play list Sing me a story - YouTube

so far it only has my two examples, of course. I guess if it gets too cluttered other play lists can be made by frequent posters and their relevant playlist re-posted. I think it helps if we also click on the “more” choice next to every song and “add/edit” notes to separate the stories.

Hmm, my second story example was confusing and almost nonsensical, I agree. I never said I was a good writer or movie editor. But this longer song story does, in my opinion, flow from one song to the next; progressing the story like chapters in a (cliff-notes) book.

I really would appreciate it if someone would critique this story and tell me what you think about it in general.

here is the playlist link starting from the top of this story
