I never understood why the Dave Matthews Band was so popular. I live in the central Virginia area, and they seem to be a big deal here. For a long time, I thought they were just a regional band, popular in the mid-Atlantic area only, with some mild success elsewhere. But, when I moved to California several years ago, I was kind of perplexed that they were performing sold out shows in the Bay Area. I know musical tastes vary greatly, but I think I’m a pretty good judge of good music. Even if I don’t like it, I can still understand why some people might. I can’t get the Dave Matthews Band. Their music is so blah to me. Yet they seem to have a large following.
Also, Tori Amos falls into this category. I’ve tried to listen to her music, but I just can’t listen to an entire song without wondering how or why she became so popular. Granted, she’s not necessarily mainstream, but she does have a large, loyal following.
What popular artists/groups puzzle you by being popular?
I file away the Dave Matthews Band in the magic box that is simply marked “American stuff that only they get”. There’s quite a bit of stuff in there, like Nascar and Benny Hill.
And obviously I over-thought that to the point that I forgot what I was writing.
What I wrote: “American stuff that only they get”
What I meant when I wrote “Benny Hill”: “Stuff only Americans like”
I blame the Oxycontin I am on for a slipped disc.

Train - had to look this one up, Hey Soul Sister, another one I hear ALL. THE. TIME. I live in terror of turning on the TV because it’s everywhere, all the time. Enough!
I’d never heard this song before. So I was playing a gig this morning, and a woman came up during the part of the set where I play mandolin and talked about how “everything is ukuleles now” and suggested “Hey, Soul Sister” by Train. So I just got home and went onto Napster to check it out.
Feh.
We will not be adding that song to our set.
