Popular band means a group or solo artist that has had multiple hit albums, not one hit wonders. So no saying Men Without Hats.
And hate means you dislike everything, or close to everything they’ve done, not just certain songs or albums.
Mine will obviously be dated:
Chicago. Can’t stand anything they did. Saw them in concert once in the 70’s (don’t ask why I went! ). 3.5 hours which was a half hour longer than the Wings concert I saw in '76. Difference being I liked Wings.
Boston. Blech!
Kansas. Must be bands named after places always suck!
Fleetwood Mac. Mac & Cheese if you ask me. Stevie Nicks does sing like a goat, I don’t care what anyone says.
**
Yes**. Um, no! Got dragged to a Yes concert last summer. They didn’t even play any of their newer work. It was all the weird sounding shit from '71. Agony!
It’s not really fair to put down a band’s live performance when they’re 30 years past their prime. Yes, some bands really should call it a day, but most of them do need some way to pay for their drug rehab bills and alimony checks.
Personally – and this may be heresy – I’ve never understood the love for The Beatles. Sure, they were a catchy pop band who branched out into more experimental territory later in their career, and I certainly don’t “hate” them per se, but dear lord, so many people worship the ground they walk on, it’s crazy.
Yes is just an awful, awful band.
Genesis was terrible as well.
I don’t hate Springsteen but I really don’t get the love.
The Grateful Dead just plain suck - if you have to be stones out of your mind on acid to appreciate music it’s probably shitty music.
I started to write a reply, realized that my list could take all day, and decided to settle on a top 3.
Kate Bush. I know that not “everyone” loves her-- I suppose she’s actually obscure, at least to today’s popular music fans. So are acts like Kansas. Anyway, I don’t like the way she sings, I find her lyrics stupider than usual*, and I don’t like the pedestal she’s on, albeit through no fault of her own.
Green Day. I have enjoyed some of their stuff but my appreciation dried up when “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” got madly overplayed and died altogether with “American Idiot”, which I found to be pandering and simply not fun.
The Beatles. You knew somebody was going to say it. Now, I appreciate them, and find them interesting in terms of their place in pop history, but I can’t say that I’ve enjoyed listening to their music in maybe a decade. I also think that they had a bad influence on pop music. Psychedelic pop was awful IMO (see America), and The Beatles had a lot to do with that nonsense. Also, the pedestal problem. And self indulgence. And how they turned out to be jerks. I don’t hate them, but I’d rather watch a documentary about them than listen to one of their albums.**
Actually, what I really hate is Geddy’s voice. He’s a great bass player, the drums and guitar are great It’s just that screechy voice. I don’t understand how people can listen to that. I remember driving around when I was younger, turning on the radio and hearing this great instrumental part of song and getting really into it, then the vocals came back and I heard “and I guess that’s why they call me, they call me the working man” and I was like, oh, it’s you.
I already didn’t like them (because of Geddy) just not well enough to recognize a song in the middle of it.
I don’t think everybody loves Yes. You got your prog guys who like the older prog stuff and sort of groove on the newer stuff, and you got your 80s people who really dug “Owner of a Lonely Heart”. I kind of see Yes as being a one-hit wonder if you aren’t in to prog.
I don’t really see people digging too deep in to the Boston or Kansas catalogs either. Their popular songs are popular yes but they’re not on par with say, The Eagles.
Sounds like you just don’t like classic rock. Or don’t like prog-tinged classic rock…or Fleetwood Mac.
Might be more worthwhile to start a thread trying to curate a list of “bands everybody likes”! Like Billy Joel.
Missy, you weren’t even around in the early/mid 70’s. Did you read the part where I posted my list would be dated?
Yes, Boston, and Kansas were immensely popular during the stadium rock concert and album rock radio station days. Their albums/music were everywhere and I hated them!
