Caveat: I am going to date myself, here, so I guess I’d say this thread may be better aimed at the over-30 crowd.
There are a number of “classic” bands that every rock fan has in their library, whose CDs you can throw on to play in the background at the weekly poker game knowing everyone will be content, whose songs you find on every classic rock playlist, who–dare I say it–help compose the canon of our classic rock heritage.
I am sorry for the pain this causes other red-blooded Americans, but I AM SICK OF THE EAGLES! I think they were (and continue to be) SO overplayed and, dare I say it, overrated.
And I am so TIRED of hearing Steely Dan I could weep. I heard it WAY too much in college and if I never hear Ricky Don’t Lose That Number another time, I will die a contented woman.
I have never liked The Doors, something that horrifies nearly everyone I admit that to.
Those are my three. Bands that everyone supposedly likes/respects/worships, but who leave me cold.
wonders if a congressional subcommittee will start investigating her over the Eagle thing.
How could anyone not like the Beatles? Beware: You are talking to someone who owns the White Album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour, and Rubber Soul. Needless to say, I love the Beatles. There is one guy I really don’t like all that much: Elvis. He may be The King, but he rules not my Top Ten. I enjoy a few of his songs, but I dislike the man himself (Hick boozers and druggies who die on the crapper don’t rate well with me.) and, indeed, most of his work. Living in the Midwest (7 years, I’ve since moved) I have had it up to here with all of the idolatry the man recieves decades after his death. John Lennon, the nutcase he was, deserves most of what Elvis has gotten. Lennon at least deserves a postage stamp, for crying out loud!
Hell, I’ve NEVER liked the Eagles, Steely Dan, or Van Morrison.
I had my fill of Hendrix, Janis, the Doors, and the Who during my college years (1978-82). I have their stuff on vinyl, but never bothered getting a CD. Oh, wait, I do have one Who CD…the one with all their oddball singles from the mid-sixties, like “Happy Jack” and “Pictures of Lily” and “I’m a Boy.” But I never need to hear Who’s Next again.
I have exactly one Elvis disc; I think it’s The Sun Sessions or something like that. When I’m in the mood for that sort of music, I’m more likely to reach for Gene Vincent or Jerry Lee Lewis.
There’s a whole lot of music I don’t really listen to but the one band I think I should like but just never have is Pink Floyd. Hits my ear drums like wet noodles against The Wall. <cringe>
:Finally gains composure and stops:
Sorry, I just had to do that, with Pink Floyd being my favorite band and all. Really, I am sorry about that.
One person I have never liked and thought that I would is Joe Walsh. At first, it sounded all right, but now, it’s just plain annoying. If I have to hear “Rocky Mountain Way” one more time, I’m going to take a baseball bat to my cd-player. And, I have to agree with Zoing about the Beatles. Never got into them, really.
Agreement with Doors and Steely Dan. Would like to add the I have never, ever liked The Rolling Stones, except “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”. Not so crazy about Led Zepplin, either. If I never had to hear “Stairway to Heaven” again, I can’t say I would weep. Also, love Bob Dylan songs, hate Bob Dylan singing them.
I never liked Elvis. Maybe one or two songs once in a while, but that’s it. And I’ve never understood why everybody loved Bob Dylan either.
I used to dislike Steely Dan, but in the effort of keeping the peace in my home, I listen to them now. My BF loves the group.
So far, so good. Cant’ complain about anything anyone’s put on their list. Steely Dan can rust, The Doors are closed, Led Zepplin pulls a hindenburg, ect ect… I listen to very little Who so I don’t burn out on them, I like them.
Let me add a few.
The Allman Brothers: Rot in Hell, dudes.
Lynrd Skynrd: Ditto. I’ll push you if it’ll help.
CCR: So Long, Suckers!
Eric Clapton: Good Bye!
Cream: In the Garbage!
Most Maudlin Country Music: Die, Infidels!
Pink Floyd: I’m going to tear that damn Wall down and build your crypt out of it, including a spot for your whiny ex-lead singer. I have to add a vote for these guys.
Elton John: Pluh-eeeeeeeeeese no more. One more “funeral for a friend” and I’ll be including YOU in that funeral.
let me add one Song, “My Heart will go on.”: No, it won’t. I’m pulling it out and stomping on it right here… (stompstompstomp)
Thanks for reminding me. As a big Grateful Dead fan, people often assume that I like other so-called “jam bands”…The Allman Bros., Phish, etc.
Nope. Can’t stand them. They don’t touch me at all.
Now, The Band…Little Feat…THOSE guys were great.
Might have something to do with connections to vintage Americana. The Dead and The Band made songs that could’ve been written and sung by 19th century coal miners (“Cumberland Blues”) or fur trappers (“Dire Wolf”) or farmers (“King Harvest”) or gamblers (“Up on Cripple Creek,” “Loser,” “Deal,” and lotsa others). Little Feat has that nice oldtime New Orleans rhythm thing going.
The Allmans and Phish…uh uh. Can’t hear it, don’t see it.
Lou Reed - You know, “Walk on the Wild Side” is HIGHLY overrated. Oh yeah, it would help if he could sing.
The Kinks - Total crap.
Janis Joplin - Wonder how’d she sound if she’d taken her foot out of the bear trap.
Bob Dylan - I like a FEW of his songs, but his voice is a bit much. I had a friend who saw him in concert about 10 years ago and he had no idea what the hell ol’ Bobby was singing and it was one of his biggest hits!
So far I haven’t heard anyone mention the Rolling Stones. I have always thought they were SOOOOO overrated! They have a couple songs that are OK–“Beast of Burden”, “Start Me Up” are about the only ones I really like–but I have never understood the fascination with Mick Jagger and crew.
If I never have to listen to these “musicians” again it will be too soon:
The Doors
The Who
The Kinks
Jimmy Hendrix
Pink Floyd
BTO
Jefferson Airplane/Starship
Is it too obvious to mention:
Britney Spears
Christina Aguliera
N’Sync
Jennifer Lopez
I like several of their songs, but I’m pretty fed up with the Beatles and Led Zepplin too. Hey, they were good in their day, but some people act like there will never be a band as good as them. Hey, I think there’s a lot of human history to go. I’ll bet 100 years from now hardly anyone will know who the hell the Beatles were. People will be talking about some other band that is “the greatest of all time.” I’ve always seen music as a pretty transitory thing. Nobody likes the same stuff forever. If you like a certain band/song/style of music and it works for you at a certain point in your life, so what? Who is anyone to criticize you for that? This is how I managed to be a Spice Girls fan at age 24, and why I have nothing bad to say to Britney Spears fans. I think the reason a lot of people don’t agree with me is because many people use the music they listen to as a means of defining their reality, whereas I do not.
I can agree with Steely Dan, LOu Reed, etc.
I LOVE the Beatles, the Doors, Dylan, but I’m not going to judge others for liking them.
Here, is, however, MY shit list:
Paula Cole (where are all the cowboys? My guess is they’re hiding in that tumbleweed underneath your arms!)
