Singers Who Are Mad At Their Dad

Rivers Cuomo strikes me as an ‘honest’ songwriter – not prone to just making things up. Looking at “Say It Ain’t So” makes me think that he, too, wasn’t keen on his old man.

Slightly OT: Did anyone else here grow to love “Rock and Roll Dad” on the old icebox.com?

Do you hate me? Do you hate GOD?!

One of my favorites, Harry Nilsson .

I don’t think Tupac Shakur was too fond of his father.

Come on, was Jonathan Davis really raped by his father?

Marvin Gay?

This is great. I can finally get started on that mix tape for Father’s Day.

Did a web search and, apparently, no. According to Davis:

"People think Daddy was written because my dad f**ked me up the ass, but that’s not what the song’s about. It wasn’t about my dad or my mom. When I was a kid I was being abused by someone else and I went to my parents and told them about it. They thought I was lying and joking around, so they never did sht about it. They didn’t believe it was happening to their son. I don’t like to talk about that song, this is the most I’ve ever talked about it." *

I’m sorry, I can’t make meatloaf.

I doubt Jewel is in that girls CD changer, but the song “Daddy” (I think) makes me believe she might not be too fond of the guy, since she talks about wanting to slit his throat and all.

I doubt the song refers to Death Cab either, but Ben Gibbard has some pretty nasty things to say about a father in Styrofoam Plates. Then again, he could well be singing the song in character.

Perry Farrel from Janes Addiction, at least from his lyrics in “Had a Dad”

Roger Waters has definite dad issues.
