Jennifer Lopez seems like in alot of her songs she’s from the Bronx - Jenny from the Block, probably others. And she is always saying in interviews “I’m just a girl from the Bronx”. J-Lo I know you are from the Bronx and you are Puerto-Rican, shut up and sing and talk about other things.
Are there other Singers who have too always tell us where they are from.
It seems like in every interview I see of her either on TV or in print, she has to tell us where she’s from–although, it varies. Sometimes she’s from the Bronx and sometimes she’s from Brooklyn. I’m not up on my boroughs, but aren’t those two different places?
She annoys the hell out of me. People who really are “real” don’t go around announcing that they are “real” to everyone at every opportunity. She’s had two songs now about how she’s “real”. Puhleeze. Real obnoxious, maybe.
Lately the giant television screen near my local train station has been playing clips from her latest video…the one with all those fabulous shots of her booty. I don’t know what she sounds like when she talks, but I’d love to bite her on the ass.
 Did I just say that?
Anyway…Jon Spencer often announces in some song or the other that he’s from New York. That’s my example.
The Boss has mentioned New Jersey quite a few times in his lyrics (not himself specifically) but it is usually mentioned he is from there in any interview he does. But hey, he is The Boss.
Oh and Slayer mentions Hell quite often.
J Lo from Bklyn? Never heard heard her say that before. But then again I don’t usually watch her interviews. I am just glad she is not from Queens.
gex gex, not really sure if you were trying to discredit my post or adding to it. You realize the The Boss is Bruce Springsteen, right?
Yes of course The Boss has mentioned other parts of the country in his songs and album titles. But the OP was about where they were from.
Oh how about Simon and Garfunkle. Lots of New York references.
I guess the difference with Rap/Hip Hop is that the are typically talking about themselves in their lyrics where other styles use their songs with characters instead.
I know, I know there are probably many exceptions but I think you get my point.
NYR407: No… I wasn’t trying to discredit you or anything For some reason, your post wasn’t there when I replied. I think I opened this thread, went off to look at some other stuff and replied about ten minutes later. So, I was (unwittingly) making the same point as you, and in doing so, I expanded on it.
In my mind, Where Bruce Sprinsteen comes from=USA.
Springsteen played a lot in Asbury Park, but I don’t believe that’s where he lived. Still, everyone new he was from Jersey.
Kid Rock mentions Detroit and its suburbs (St Clair Shores) a few times.
Many artists from New Orleans like to let you know where they’re from, and sing a lot about their hometown (Dr. John, Neville Bros. Prof. Longhair, Better than Ezra)
