Single people and cooking dinner...

Me, I’m all over the place. Some nights dinner is a bag of potato chips and some wine; tonight I sauted frozen “Chinese vegetables” in olive oil, with some garlic, turmeric, pepper, soy sauce, sesame oil, raisins, and red wine vinegar for some flavor; sometimes I spend hours chopping stuff up for flavorful soups.

Heat some Trader Joe’s naan (especially the curry or tandoori) for a great complement to frozen veggies for a quick meal; canned (or boxed) soups over wild rice are easy and good-tasting. Oh, and there are some unusual pastas that are nice- quinoa, lentil, or rice can be a good change of pace, both in terms of taste and nutrition; just top them with canned sauce (tomato or pesto) or just olive oil with garlic and herbs. Yummers!

I’m single, and I’m a decent cook. However since I’ve started living alone, I don’t cook all that much anymore. The first problem is that I learned cooking from my mom who always made way too much for our family. And somehow I always end up with too much for 4 people, let alnoe one person. I also snack and nibble on the half-prepared foodstuffs while I eat. I often get so full while making the meal, that I don’t eat the finished product at all. Since no one else is around it never actaully gets tasted by anyone in top form(which kind of depresses me), being immediatly put in the freezer, which doesn’t taste the same heated up the next day. I gear most of my cooking to knowing I can freeze it, so crock-pot chiles, stews, barbequed pork and the like are my most often cooked now. I also cook alot of pork shoulders and loins, and other things that can be turned into great sandwiches for the next week.

The biggest cooking advantage to cooking alone is steak. I always had a grill-out once every week or so, buying steak for everybody. Usually a good t-bone or the like. But now since I’m only buying one piece for me I can afford to get a Super-prime, extra-glorious, perfect-aged, piece of divine cow flesh.

Sometimes when I find a good deal, like a package of 3 pounds chicken breasts for 4 bucks I’ll chalenge my self, and eat one everynight for two weeks , trying to find a different way to cook it each time.
