So, in a few weeks, I will be boarding a plane for San Antonio, for six and a half weeks of rest and relaxation, better known as Air Force Basic Military Training.
It has both been suggested that I should bring a book to read (on the plane and at MEPS before I fly out) and that I should lose the book somewhere before I leave the airport in San Antonio (since of course, AFBMT is so chock full of fun, that something like a book would only slow me down while running enthusiastically from activity to activity).
So basically, I need a book that is fun to read, good for killing several hours, and utterly disposable without worry. If anyone has done AFBMT recently happens to be online and knows of an ideal point at which to lose the book, that’d be appreciated too.
If you haven’t read the Da Vinci Code, it is a real page turner and utterly disposable.
I can’t help with a good place to lose the book, but Sunset and Sawdust by Joe Lansdale qualifies as a page-turner – fun to read and available in paperback, which equals disposable.
Another fun read is Darwin’s Blade by Dan Simmons.
They both read like action movies, which is perfect for a long, tedious trip.
A friend of mine said that *Starship Troopers * really helped get him pumped for basic, and it can be read in under 6 hours or so.
Actually, that does sound like a great idea. And that book is probably due for a re-read, since the first (and only) time I’ve read it was in the 10th grade, something like 8 years ago.
G. K. Chesterton’s The Man Who Was Thursday is an eas yread at just 140 pages, but will leave your head spinning for quite some time after that.
