Sintel: 15 min open-source animated short. Holy crap this is awesome! [SPOILERS]

Just go watch it. Then go read more about it.

Ok, I had to go watch it again and wander around the site a bit before commenting further, but I got a bit impatient with the sharing…

I would love to be a fly on the wall for just 15 minutes to soak up some GIMP skills. Consider my eyes opened to Blender. If this is what it is capable of, I’m hoping for a lot more great things.

I’m confused about the story. Did Sintel find Scales when Scales was grown up, then kill him in the battle? Or was that Scales’ mommy? Biological mommy or snatched-and-adopted mommy?

All that seems lost in the animation congratulations.

Yes. She didn’t realise years had passed, she was so focussed on her quest, but when she realised what had happened she saw her hair had started to go grey and that she had killed Scales.

That was a mature Scales. I parsed it as Sintel had searched for Scales so single-mindedly (and/or was so emotionally shattered by the abduction) that she was not aware of the how much time had passed and that they had both aged considerably. The adult in the cave has a scar on the wing indicating it was Scales.

I guess I should have put a spoiler warning in my OP…

I thought the story was great, and the music, and the animation.

That was so so sad…

What is open source here?

All of the software used to make the film was open source. Among others, Blender is an open source 3d animation suite available for Windows, Linux, and Mac OSX. Gimp is an open-source image manipulation suite, also cross-platform.

The film itself is free for download in a variety of formats and subtitles are available in a variety of languages.

If you buy the 4 disc dvd set ($47), you’ll receive:

Ah. I thought you meant the film’s sources were open somehow.

Unless I’m misunderstanding you, they are. The film’s sources are the “.blend files, models, textures, and so on”.

Classic idiot plot.
