Sinus Infection and Polyups

I have a friend who suffers from frequent sinus infections. Her doctor refused to give her more meds until she had a cat scan done to see if there was anything there besides your standard infection. This scan showed pollups. My friend has a few questions. I know she should ASK her doctor these but I know she gets scared to talk about it so I’m asking my fellow dopers the following

  1. Is the surgery to remove them done as in-patient or out-patient

  2. Do they have to knock you totally out

  3. How long is the recovery process

any dopers who had this done and have success stories, your stories would be appreciated to so I can let her read them.

Your friend needs to overcome her fears and discuss them with her doctor – sicne these things are handled differently in different places. She is not doing herself a favour by getting generic answers, and a good doctor should answer all of her questions before an operation. A good doctor cannot always answer questions that are never posed.

Polyps do not always require surgical intervention. Many polyps can be done using local and topical anaesthesia as an outpatient. More complex cases are done under general anaesthesia (more likely if also combined with an ethmoidectomy, opening of the sphenoid sinus, enlargement of the frontal sinus or Caldwell-Luc operation).

We do not have enough general info to give you good advice. Your friend needs to ask question to her doctor who has the CT report, and an ENT surgeon if an operation is considered.

Outpatient.

Not usually. Unless they have to go into a sinus cavity that can’t be accessed directly from the nasal passages. Polyps are usually in the airway and should be removed.
Colon polyps are normally removed when a colonoscopy is done, out patient procedure.

Having had both precedures 2 or 3 x I never really paid much attention. No problems.

If you find yourself in this situation, ask to see the scanner. If they show you some computer driven X-ray device, back out right away! You want a genuine cat. Look into the cat’s eyes to make sure you are getting the real thing!!! Don’t let some shifty doctor bring in a chocolate-colored dog, so he can charge you Lab fees, either!!! No, sirree! :dubious:
