A couple of friends have mentioned that Ikea has swivel office chairs that they find are nearly as good as the Aeron ones, but at a much cheaper price.
Ah that’s right, you can’t edit posts here, can you? Anyway, here’s the ones we use at our office:

I will second this. Although it does not look that comfortable, the Herman Miller Aeron is *the *chair for people who sit on their ass all day in front of a computer. For me, the advantage over other pricey office chairs is the comfort of seat and back. Not only is it fully adjustable, but there is something about the way the mesh is strung that seems to reduce pressure points and makes the chair easy to sit in all day long. With other chairs I am always shuffling around.
ETA: If you cannot afford the retail price, you can often find these chairs used on Craigslist or at office furniture liquidator stores for much cheaper. A used Aeron is worth much more than a new chair from Office Depot.
Yeah, I just tried that and I think I’m going to bite the bullet on one. $400 is a lot more reasonable than $800.
I got a cast-off Aeron from a friend whose company partner didn’t like it (yes, a good friend). I agree with all those reasons why it is wonderful. The lumbar support mysteriously and effortlessly makes me maintain good posture (I have occasional back issues and this seat helps cure them instead of perpetuating them). The mesh material has been amazingly good during this heat wave, when it has gone up to the 90’s inside and even though I’m sweating, I’m not sticking to the seat but actually appreciating the extra ventilation. There’s no way I could have afforded one otherwise, and I’m very grateful to have it.
