Site that reports marketing rates of success

Yesterday I had lunch with a guy who told me that some of the most famous marketing campaigns actually failed. He stated that Wendy’s Where’s The Beef adverts, though quoted by damn near everyone at the time, actually caused Wendy’s sales to drop. He mentioned a few others that you would probably all know as well.

I believe that he may be victim to an urban legend, but I can’t find any data on it. Is there a site or a book that might settle the matter? (Actually, if true it would be interesting too, so either way I’d like to see a book or site)

– The diminutive octogenarian actress made the phrase a part of the language and helped Wendy’s sales jump 31% last year, to $945 million, at the company’s 3,095 fast-food restaurants worldwide. –
