I have no idea how many (if any) passengers and flight personnel are racist. They seem to be simply over-excitable people who need to get grips on their perceptions.
To my knowledge, we have only “heard” from two passengers: the original author of the paranoid note and the anonymous “Pauline” who expressed her views by anonymous e-mail, not at the scene, who might be simply a person who was not even there piling on with her own agenda. (The link provided made a big deal of her “fear” and her anguish at the “feeding frenzy” prompted by a CNN exec getting hold of her e-mail, yet none or little of that “feeding frenzy” appears to have even made it into the media.)
I think it is every bit as likely that most passengers (now scattered across the Southwest) have made no comment one way or another and that some who might have been neutral have decided to say nothing because they were irritated either by the delay to the flight or the behavior of the imams after they were singled out for paranoid delusions.
Thanks for the explanation. I too am mystified by their refusal to fly them after the fact. I initially thought there may have been an extended angry confrontation after they were taken off the plane. Even if the Imams were deliberately provocative if US air was worried about a potential lawsuit then it seems the smart thing would have been to fly them ASAP after they were released by the FBI.
What if the Imams had already talked lawsuit just for being removed. Remember what the Imam said in the first interviews. If someone has threatened to sue do you want them on your aircraft? I don’t think they necessarily made a mistake by deciding to question them.
Either some US air official made a really stupid judgment call or there’s a reason we haven’t heard yet and which we won’t hear from the Imams.
A meditation room would be available to folks from any and all religions , or no religion, so that one might pray or meditate away from the crowds. No one suggested it be made mandatory.
I think freedom to worship also needs some reasonable limits. We have some already. Years ago one denomination would gather in the town square and with one person on every corner and shout Bible passages at the top of their lungs. It hurt down town businesses and was annoying as hell. I think they should have been hauled away for disturbing the peace but they weren’t.
Look at the picture of a group of men kneeling on their prayer rugs in a public place. I guess thats not disturbing the peace but it might be close. What if they all pray out loud? Is it disturbing the peace then? I support people practicing the religion of their choice but in a diverse world I expect those people to show some reasonable consideration for others.
You are correct. A reasonable person should not be threatened by a small group praying in public. As several people have pointed out. It wasn’t just the prayer but a combination of incidents.
