Six Spanish Women Raped in Acapulco: Mexico Unsafe?

I saw this on Drudge-a horrifying crime! The women were tied up and repeatedly raped-while their husbands were tied up. This happened to people who had no connection to the drug trade-we have been told that “violence in Mexico is bad…but its only between the drug gangs”.
Now, it appears , there is a general trend where everybody (including foreign tourists) are at risk. Is Mexico an unsafe country to visit? Would you go to Acapulco?

I would not go to Acapulco nor anywhere that borders the USA. The west and north of Mexico has become lawless for all practical purposes.

However I visited Cancun and Cozumel last year and felt safe enough.

Uh, yeah bad things happen in all sorts of places all the time. It doesn’t mean the entire enormous country is immediately unsafe to travel to.

Not so. When they do those mass beheadings to demonstrate their power, they just grab schoolkids off the streets

The reports I find in Spanish newspapers vary from “a group of six men and six women from Spain plus a Mexican woman (the Mexican woman was not attacked)” to “six tourist couples in a hotel, the men and the hotel’s employees were tied up (no mention of employees genders)”. All of them state that it’s a very unsafe area.

I’ve been to Mexico several times; there were places where I felt perfectly safe, others where I was happy to be with “my husband” (actually a male friend), and others where I wouldn’t have set foot out of the hotel. Then again, the same applies to several other countries including the US and several European ones.

The State Department recommends against going to Juarez:

I’ve heard that at least one US manufacturer who moved operations to Juarez provides transportation to and from the factory for women workers.

Actually, I did skip across the border from El Paso to Juarez. Of course that was back when it was a fairly safe place to walk about.

Yeah, things are pretty bad in some parts of Mexico, thanks to American drug addicts supplying money to Mexican drug lords.

I remember finding it very sad a few years ago when I read about how Erika Gandara, the last police officer in Juarez, was kidnapped…it looks like they never did find her body unfortunately.
