Ski jump scandal rocks Norway!

Honest question: is there any sport without some kind of scandal or cheating in its history? And how much did these guys stand to gain if they got away with it?

I had to read the article because I thought the cheating must involve the skis and not the suits. If you look at the pic on the right of Forfang in flight, his crotch is obviously lower than one might expect, increasing the surface area. Funny little scandal, really.

Yeah that’s a really badly written article. The actual interesting details about how they cheated using their outfit (not actually that interesting it turns out just larger than usual which apparently gives an advantage?) are hidden all the way at the bottom of the article, in a single sentence.

What has emerged involves team officials manipulating pre-approved and microchipped suits to increase their size and improve aerodynamics to help athletes fly further.

The rest is incredibly pointless detail about who exactly is being punished and by which committee. Why does the AP think that’s what people are interested in?

I read the link headline as “topless” not “topples” and thought it was a slow news day in Norway.

I cannot remember the details. But, we had a thread about a stuffing a fish with weights scandal in American trophy fishing.

He’s just happy to see you.

That was also the first thread that came to mind when I saw this one.

Here you go: Cheating in prize fishing - how common is it?

Requiring ski jumpers to be completely nude, except for their skis, would prevent suit cheating.

Some guys would still have an advantage in the crotch.

Maybe it’s time to stop revering old rules based on old technology. Let ski jumpers where anything that will provide the greatest flight distance. Put a limit on the weight of the suits for fairness but stay out of the way they are designed. Obviously stuffing weights into fish is outside the bounds of the sport but we also had a thread about the type of lures used where a dozen spinning lures hanging off something that looks like a wire coat hanger was allowed, but not if the entire assembly was rotating. Learn a lesson from professional wrestling, cheating makes wrestling far more entertaining than the amateur sport.

Well, unlike other sports, professional wrestling is literally scripted and non-competitive, so the argument really doesn’t hold.

I have to agree with TriPolae. Professional wrestling is big business. More sports should follow this example.

Additionally, while the winner is predetermined most matches are not scripted. The referee’s actual job is to pass instructions to the wrestlers, Various signals are also given as to whether a match should be stretched out or just finished quickly.

I would keel to have that kind of advantage.

Ski jumper jumps with powered wingsuit. Flight distance measured in miles.

Game over.
