Ski jumping. Medals coming up...

In a few minutes the final ten competitors in the ski jump will make their runs. Medals coming up…

Wow. Nice jump by Schlierenzauer (AUT).

Malysz overtakes Shlierenzauer!

And knocks Ahonen into 3rd. My mom’s husband was from Finland, so I was hoping Ahonen would medal. One jumper to go…

Beautiful jump by Ammann!

And the winners are…

Simon Ammann (AUT), Gold
Adam Malysz, (POL), Silver
Gregor Schlierenzauer (AUT), Bronze

First medals of the games.

Congratulations to the athletes!

Moved Cafe Society --> The Game Room. Difficulty 1.2; execution 6.9.

Artistic Impression 10.0 in a shameless suck-up to the mod.

Yeah, well done with Ammann. I was pissed they weren’t showing this live. I caught half of the first jump live via Hungarian EuroSport, and then my stream died and couldn’t find any other ones. Thought for a moment that the Austrians might not even medal, but Schlierenzauer managed to make up for his poor first jump.

I used to watch ski jumping quite regularly up to 2003. It’s amazing how many familiar names are still with us and competitive in 2010. My folks are both Polish, so naturally I’ve been following Malysz–I’m very impressed with his finish on the normal hill. But Ahonen has always been one of my favorite, and he just missed a medal, finishing fourth. Impressive for a guy who came out of retirement for this Olympics.

Ah, crap, didn’t realize they’re still showing this on TV–thought they had finished broadcast. Apologies for a minor spoiler in the last post, but I suspect nobody is really going to care too much.

It was shown on TV here.

I was just thinking it’d be kind of nice to be in the very first event–then you’d just get to sit back and enjoy the rest of the games.

And very nice jump by Ammann.

I’m excited to see tomorrow’s large hill event. The normal hill is an odd duck: Most of these guys compete at K120-K185 throughout the season–I think the shortest hill is a K115–so it’s unusual seeing them jumping at this distance. Wonder if the Austrians are gonna come back strong. I’m going to be rooting hard for Ahonen and Malysz. And, heck, if Ammann had another two-gold showing, that’d be a great story, too.
