Skill-test for contests

When I was in Montreal last fall, I heard a radio contest…and mention of successful completion of a “skill test” to receive the prize?

WTF? What do they do…ask a trivia question? Require the contestant to chop down a tree? thread a needle?

Is this so the contest will not be a game of pure chance?

Yes and yes. The “test” is usually a simple math question along the lines of “What is two plus two?”

It is significant that you mention that you are in Canada because that is where the statute exists, IIRC. I ran a sweepstakes that was distributed in the North Central area of the US and we anticipated some drift into Canada, so we had to put in a statement like the one you describe.

I never got heavily into the legality of it, but Canadian law apparently proscribes pure sweepstakes.

Some info.
