As mentioned in this thread there is a program called Skype enabling PC to PC voice calls, I’m just wondering does anybody from the boards use it?
I don’t use it, having never heard of it, and not having a microphone. Hope this helps you.
I use it. Comes in crystal clear. I really like it.
My husband uses it much more than I do to talk with some friends while they all play World of Warcraft. I’ve joined that conversation a few times, but not playing the game, had to bow out pretty early.
I use it all the time. Makes internet relationships a little easier. I’ve even used it to listen to music with my love by playing an MP3 and letting the microphone pick it up playing from my speakers, and it didn’t get spoiled by lag or feedback or anything. Sometimes it gets a little screwy, but it has a solid IM program built in, so we use that to communicate through the rough spots.
I’ve used the pay version too. The connection is great, and very cheap, but the interface for dialing the number leaves something to be desired.
I started using it because of that thread. I got a microphone for Christmas, but I can never get voice chat to connect using MSN. I know another friend who uses it occasionally as well.
Yeah, I’ve started using it when during a particularly long call the person calling said “This is costing me a fortune, we’ve both got broadband. Install Skype ya bastard and I’ll talk to you on that”. Or words to that effect.
I’m throughly impressed, I work in telephony and used to work with Internet Telephony systems and it’s impressive that they’ve produced something that “Just works” with all the different systems I’ve seen people try it on. I particularly like the confrence call facility on it, and the combination of different communication forms.
Bottom line, it’s really, really, cool.
I installed Skype on a business trip (Europe to USA) after mobile phone calls were costing me a fortune ($1 a minute). I bought credit for $10, called the office, my boyfriend and my Mom and still had $8.02 left over. Whoopee! I’ve used it ever since, also to call friends on broadband.
The only time the service didn’t work properly was on New Year’s Eve, but I guess there was just too much demand at that time. All the other times I’ve used it the reception was crystal clear, even better than on a “regular” phone.
Oh, by the way, I use headphones with a little microphone attached. They were rather cheap ($12) but make you feel a little bit like a call center agent. I’m considering buying a bluetooth set. Has anybody tried that and does it work properly?
