Sleep Poll: Your hours, your protocols...

  1. Demographics (age, gender, married, kids?)
Single, female, early 40s, no kids.
  2. What is your usual bedtime/wake time? How different is it from your preferred bedtime/wake time?
I have to be up by 6:30 if I am teaching a 7:30 class. My usual time would be about an hour later than that.
  3. How do you feel when you first wake up?
Usually okay. If I had a Tylenol PM, then a bit groggy.
  4. From your first wakeful moment in the morning, how long does it take you to feel awake and functional?
I feel better after 1 or 2 cups of coffee. I have to eat breakfast as well.
  5. Do you use an alarm clock? Do you hit snooze? Does it annoy your bedmate, if you have one?
Yes, two alarm clocks, I hit the snooze twice, no bedmate.
  6. If you could take a pill that would eliminate the need for sleep, would you take it?
    No.
  7. Do you have any nightly rituals that comfort you or help you sleep?
    No.
  1. Demographics (age, gender, married, kids?)
    32, female, married, no kids

  2. What is your usual bedtime/wake time? How different is it from your preferred bedtime/wake time?
I’m usually in bed between 10 and 11 PM and I wake up between 7 and 8 AM. That is pretty much my preferred schedule.

  3. How do you feel when you first wake up?
It depends on what I have to do that day. If I’m dreading the day, I’ll be tired and groggy. Otherwise, I’m feel about the same as I do any other time of the day.

  4. From your first wakeful moment in the morning, how long does it take you to feel awake and functional?
A few minutes at most. If I’ve snoozed the alarm clock, it may take a little longer (15 minutes or so) to feel fully awake.

  5. Do you use an alarm clock? Do you hit snooze? Does it annoy your bedmate, if you have one?
During the week, I use an alarm clock or my cell phone and I am really bad about hitting snooze. Strangely, if I set the alarm, I will want to keep sleeping. But if I don’t set an alarm, I’ll usually wake up around 7. My husband is a very deep sleeper, so my alarm doesn’t bother him, but his bugs the shit out of me. He gets up first and he doesn’t really wake up to his alarm. So, instead it wakes me up and I bug him until he turns it off and gets up. Luckily, I can usually fall right back to sleep.

  6. If you could take a pill that would eliminate the need for sleep, would you take it?
Absolutely not. I love sleeping. There’s nothing better than a good night’s sleep or an afternoon nap.

  7. Do you have any nightly rituals that comfort you or help you sleep? I read in bed, but I generally don’t make it more than a page or two before I’m too sleepy to continue. I’ve tried watching TV, but it keeps me up even if I’m sleepy, so no TV in the bedroom for me.

  1. 37, Male, married, one 2yo, one -1 month old
  2. I typically sleep 1 AM - 4 AM, then 5 AM - 6AM, then 7:30 AM - 9:30 AM. I prefer awake 25 hours, asleep 10 hours.
  3. Absolutely craptastic.
  4. Around 12 hours, then I’m wide awake.
  5. No @#$%^& alarm clock. I’ll get to work when I’m functional enough to drive without falling asleep.
  6. Og yes, even if there were major side effects.
  7. Currently: TV I’m not interested in enough to keep me awake, but not so boring that I can’t stand to watch it (usually old cartoons), combined with lunesta, OTC sleep aids, or lorazepam. In the past: large quantities of alcohol or weed.
  1. Demographics (age, gender, married, kids?)

43, female, single, no kids or pets

  1. What is your usual bedtime/wake time? How different is it from your preferred bedtime/wake time?

I usually go to bed around midnight and in the summer wake around 8 am, in the winter it’s around 10 am (S.A.D)

  1. How do you feel when you first wake up?

Blergh

  1. From your first wakeful moment in the morning, how long does it take you to feel awake and functional?

About as long as it takes me to make it to the toilet for a wee

  1. Do you use an alarm clock? Do you hit snooze? Does it annoy your bedmate, if you have one?

Don’t use an alarm clock unless I have to get up for something

  1. If you could take a pill that would eliminate the need for sleep, would you take it?

Heck no! Sleep’s the only respite I get, and it’s where I get to have funkeh dreams

  1. Do you have any nightly rituals that comfort you or help you sleep?

I pretend I’m Wonder Woman leaping and bounding around beating bad guys …

  1. Female. 30. Single. No kids.
  2. Between 10pm and 11pm. I’d like to go to bed around 9pm, though I never seem to make it.
  3. If by the alarm, shitty. If on my own, I feel pretty darn good.
  4. About an hour. Though if I get dressed before then, it seems to help.
  5. Yes. I hit snooze on the week day probably at least 10 times. I set it for 5am knowing I won’t get up until closer to 630.
  6. Nope. I love my sleep. I love how I feel when I wake up after a good night sleep.
  7. I will generally lay there for about 10 minutes or so. Most of the time I will text 2 or 3 people that I know are awake and talk to them for a little bit. Makes me feel not so alone and stops my mind from racing a bit.
  1. 31 years old in a couple of weeks, male, single, live alone.

  2. On weekdays, I hit the sack around 11:30-12:00 and wake up at 6:45. On weekends, about 1:00 am to 10:00 am.

  3. I usually am pretty groggy when I first wake up. I don’t like to talk to people and don’t like people talking to me.

  4. Usually takes about 15 minutes to feel awake or one shower.

  5. I use an alarm clock. I don’t snooze, but I do reset the alarm as part of my morning ritual.

  6. I might sometimes take a pill to eliminate sleep, but generally I enjoy sleeping so most of the time I wouldn’t.

  7. I have a couple of rituals before bed. Either I read for a while or I watch about 30-45 minutes of a movie, which I then continue on the next night and so on.

  1. 36, female, married, 2 kids (ages 8 & 16)
  2. Sun - Thurs bedtime is around 9:00 pm, Mon - Fri wake up is 5:45 am weekends bedtime is whenever I get tired, wake up is usually around 7:00 am
  3. tired
  4. not very long, maybe 2 - 3 minutes. I’m not a “morning person” but once I’m up, I’m up, you know?
  5. Yes. I hit snooze twice – my alarm is set for 5:30, and my snooze is 8 minutes – how weird is that? – so I get up at 5:46. I actually do this for my son, who is in the same room. It helps him prep to get up. My husband is the one who has the annoying alarm that goes off for 30 minutes before being touched and is loud enough to wake the dead while he just snores away.
  6. yes. I have asked my doctor for a script for the provigil, since I may have slight narcolepsy, but he won’t do it, because he knows I would use it to stay awake and get more things accomplished. Damn actually cares about his patients doctor!
  7. *No. Well, when I can, I like to rub one out before bed, it helps calm me. Much better than sex, but when you’re married, husbands don’t understand that you can rub one out and still be ready for midnight wake-up sex. *
  1. Age 38, in long-term relationship, no kids
  2. Weekday routine: try to be in bed by 11, up at 6 Weekend: in bed by midnight, up around 9
  3. When I first wake up I ALWAYS feel like I want to sleep more
  4. 15-20 minutes until I’m feeling functional
  5. Yes to alarm clock. Yes to snooze. BF never complains, although I bet he wishes I’d get up the first time.
  6. No, I wouldn’t take a pill. Sleeping is one of my favorite things to do! When I go outside and it’s a remarkably beautiful day, the first thing I think about is how great it would be to take a nap in that weather!
  7. Reading is my “warm milk”. I usually make it through about 4 paragraphs before I start nodding. Which is why it’s impossible for me to be in a book club!
  1. 34… married… 2 small children & a dog
  2. 10-11pm to 6am… I like my bedtime, but would love to sleep until 10am…
  3. I am the rudest human being upon waking up. Do not even THINK of speaking to me that early. My kids even know this unspoken rule at their tender ages.
  4. After tramadol and my coffee, I am human.
  5. I use an alarm clock - I hit snooze once before the anxiety of the impending day wakes me up
  6. Only on an as-needed basis. I can’t imagine being conscious for 24 hours/day… God help me.
  7. I read - it’s the sure-fire way to fall asleep.
  1. 25, female, single, no kids.
  2. On average? 12:30 - 6:30. I try to get around six hours if I can. I find I’m in a better mood if I get up around 6 or 6:30 on weekdays, mostly because that gives me time to get ready for work. My preferred sleeping hours. . .well. Hm. Maybe 1-8? I like doing things late at night, but. . .hell. I’ve learned the hard way that I can’t have major shifts between weekend and weekday sleep schedules.
  3. Depends entirely on how I’m woken up. If I’m woken up by something other than my alarm clock, I’m usually okay. I’m downright pleasant and happy if woken at a reasonable hour by a phone call from someone I like. If, however, I’ve been awakened by my alarm clock (or the threat of same), then I’m deeply antisocial. I don’t want to talk. Period. Come see me after Diet Coke.
  4. About twenty minutes, unless I’m really sleep deprived.
  5. Yes, though I’d say I wake without it a good half of the time. I won’t hit snooze, but, now that I’m on my own, I will listen to NewsRadio 78 for a few minutes before getting up.
  6. If it were non-habit-forming, and didn’t have side-effects? Yes, I sometimes would.

Usually up around 9 or 10am, asleep around 2am. I work the evening shift, 3-11:30pm.

  3. How do you feel when you first wake up?
Groggy as all hell. Usually pretty hard to get out of bed, but I have the odd rare morning where I’ll wake up chipper and ready to go.

  4. From your first wakeful moment in the morning, how long does it take you to feel awake and functional?
I used to think it took me a few hours to be functional, because I’d get to school on autopilot and nod through my first morning class. But now that I wake up at 9ish, I find I’m alert much quicker.

  5. Do you use an alarm clock? Do you hit snooze? Does it annoy your bedmate, if you have one?
Need an alarm clock and I’m a serial snoozer. So’s the boyfriend, and he’s got his own alarm on his side of the bed, so we’ll have alarms going off at weird intervals, between the two clocks. It’s annoying but that’s sort of the point. We’ll get sick of it and get up.

  6. If you could take a pill that would eliminate the need for sleep, would you take it?
I’d take it some nights, but not every night.

  7. Do you have any nightly rituals that comfort you or help you sleep?
Sex. Not every night, but when I manage it, it helps wear me out a little. Otherwise, we usually just watch TV together at night till we’re tired, and head to bed. No TV in the bedroom.

  1. 28, male, single, no kids
  2. Usually: 1AM to 7:20AM, preferred: just give me 8-9 hours, whenever.

  3. Rested, usually
  4. 45 minutes, and 1-1/2 cups of coffee
  5. Yes, I hit it once. So does he, but we’re on different schedules. Slightly annoying to each of us.
  6. No, I like to sleep. Nice dreams are cool.
  7. One hour of TV on a timer, although I’m usually asleep within a half hour.

I’m up late tonight, because the Dope was down.

Going to bed now - nite-nite!

  1. 23, male, not married, no kids

  1. Female, 53, single, no kids.
  2. Around 10:00, around 6:30 on work days. On days off, around midnight and 7:00. Sometimes I stay up all night Saturday and sleep Sunday afternoon.
  3. Up and raring to go.
  4. Around 2 1/2 minutes.
  5. Nope.
  6. If I could take a pill that would make sleep optional, yes. But I would not want to never sleep again.
  7. I have to have really hot bath before sleeping.
  1. 33, female, married, one two-year-old
  2. Usual bedtime is 12:30/1 a.m., wake time around 6 or 6:30. Would prefer to sleep around 10 or so (ideally would prefer to sleep not at all)
  3. Groggy, somewhat watchful since our kid is usually playing in our room when I wake up so I want to make sure someone’s at least listening to him.
  4. About 5-10 mins.
  5. I turn one on just in case our son should sleep later than usual (read: later than 6:30). If he does, I re-set it to 6:45. I don’t hit snooze because the thing is more than 12 years old and snooze doesn’t work. It doesn’t bother my husband - even though he claims to be a light sleeper, he could and has slept through an earthquake.
  6. Absolutely. I like sleep, but my life would be a lot easier if I didn’t need it and could indulge once in a while.
  7. I usually read in bed before sleep, but don’t generally need any help falling asleep. I generally crash within 5 minutes of laying down and turning out the light.

  2. What is your usual bedtime/wake time? How different is it from your preferred bedtime/wake time?

  3. How do you feel when you first wake up?
    Usually happy and optimistic.

  4. From your first wakeful moment in the morning, how long does it take you to feel awake and functional?
It depends on whether I have a reason to feel awake and functional. If I’m going running that morning, ten minutes. If I have a day-long meeting at work, maybe an hour.

  5. Do you use an alarm clock? Do you hit snooze? Does it annoy your bedmate, if you have one?
I have an alarm clock. I do not hit snooze. My sometimes-bedmate always wakes up before me, but the snooze wouldn’t bother him. Nothing does.

  6. If you could take a pill that would eliminate the need for sleep, would you take it?
No. Sleeping is one of the happiest parts of my life.

  7. Do you have any nightly rituals that comfort you or help you sleep?
I cuddle my cat for a while. I cuddle my man for a while. I usually have a small glass of milk before bed.

  1. 31, male, single
  2. I go to bed around 2am and I wake up around 7:30 or 8. I don’t set my alarm and I’m not tired during the day so I guess it’s all the sleep I need.
  3. In my whole life I’ve never been a morning person. After a shower, I’m fine.
  4. See above. I have my shower right away, so 10 minutes.
  5. See above. I haven’t used an alarm clock in a couple years.
  6. No, its the only time I can relax. I’ve never had trouble sleeping. I’ve just never needed much of it.

  2. Usually sleep from 1AM to 8:30AM. I’d really like to sleep later.

  5. Yes, alarm clock every day. Normally hit snooze once or twice.

  7. I usually read or watch TV. I don’t sleep until I’m tired, which may be at 10:30 or may be at 2AM.
  1. Male, single, no kids
  2. 11:30pm+/- 30 min. to 7am
  3. Refreshed if 11pm, sleepy if 12pm
  4. Immediately functional
  5. Generally no. My work schedule is flexible, so I’d rather oversleep a bit and make it up later than get up before I’m ready to wake up. Sometimes I do have things scheduled in the AM, and I’ll set the alarm.
  6. Of course. Unless there were bad side effects. It seems there are always bad side effects.
  7. No.
