Sleeping in the cold

I like it cold when I sleep myself. I lie down in the bed and pull the covers up to my neck and get all toasty…good sleeping.

However…I don’t cover my head yet my head doesn’t get cold.

Why is this?

I know your head throws out a lot of heat hence a hat is needed outside. Is that it? Is it your hair? Is it because you head has copius blood flow at the surface? Just cut your scalp once and you will see what I mean. Is there a particular reason your head and face doesn’t need to be covered?

Because your blood is getting warmed up in your torso, then taking that heat to your head.

Sleep outside in below-freezing weather and you’ll want that hat. With typical indoor temperatures and the rest of your body well-covered, there’s more than enough body heat generated to offset the head’s heat loss.
