Slipknot? Could someone explain this fucking shit!

They come across as a very cynically targeted band being sold to particular demographics groups through angst, aggression and rebelliousness. In my opinion, that’s as manufactured as any boy band, regardless of whether they write their own material. The fact that they may be more musically talented is a minor difference to my mind, but not much more than that.

Love those board hiccups!

I’m not much of a fan of Slipknot ( nu-metal is shit, give me Motorhead and Black Sabbath anyday) and I don’t rate Iron Maiden too highly. But until Slipnot or any of the Nu “Metal” bands can write something similar to Fear of the Dark or Back in Black, I’ll be old metal all the way.

And no nu-metal band will ever reach the pinacle of metal that is “Ace of Spades”.
And I’m the grand old age of 22.

I like Slipknot, Coal Chamber, Marilyn Manson, Megadeth, Alice Cooper, Alice in Chains, Fear Factory, NIN, Kittie, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, DMX, Motley Crue, POD, Korn, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Enya, Enigma, and gregorian chant.

Music is music.

Personal taste is something else entirely.

And it’s all a matter of what you’re used to. My dad used to complain that he couldn’t figure out what my musicians were saying in their lyrics. I told him that, IMO, Kingston Trio was a tad too slow (but still fun to listen to).

I find some dance music a tad to fast for me these days, but it’s still fun to listen to.

I should add to my comment above that I have nothing against those who do enjoy Slipknot’s music; I agree completely with Tristan that it’s down to taste. I’m sure my preferred listening wouldn’t necessarily appeal to other posters.

Slipknot bore the shit out of me - there’s something desperately banal about their attempts to shock. I always liked the Onion’s pisstake of Marilyn Manson’s similarly ‘shlock’ theatrics

Hi gang. I was wondering exactly what it is that people think that Slipknot does to try to “shock” people? Wearing costumes and playing detuned metal doesn’t count as “shocking”. Marilyn Manson, he did stuff that was outside the realm of his musical act to try to shock people. But the kids from Slipknot do not do that. They just play some very heavy music.

I will say that these guys put on one hell of an energetic show and thier drummer is one of the top drummers in metal right now. He is spectacular.

What do they do to try to “shock” though?

Please, don’t be coy. A single search of “Slipknot shit on stage” turns up more links than you can shake a stick at. How about this

Honestly, in no way is this a hackneyed attempt at shock, done a thousand times before but now used as an attempt to create a pseudorebellious image to woo the teenage market.

GG Allin must be spinning in his grave.

[Bart]I’d loik to play me latest chaht-toppah. It’s called, “Me Fans Are Stupid Pigs”[/Bart].

Sadly Slipknot’s inadequacies are not merely musical. In an interview with Q magazine ( August 2001 edition), Shawn “Clown” Crahan said

I don’t know if I’m getting cynical in my old age or what, but I simply cannot take anything anyone who is selling something does seriously. Ooohh, Hitler wasn’t such a bad guy! That’s sure to offend somebody. No doubt some of it comes from answering the same stupid questions ad nauseum too.
Someone previously mentioned GG Allin. After reading interviews with him, I got the impression that even he (the sickest rocker of all[sup]tm[/sup]) was milking the publicity machine. I’m going to kill myself on stage!! That will be sure to shock and outrage your parents! Then, he ends up dying the typical loser junkie death.

I suppose this might change when I have kids, but right now it’s all I can do to suppress a laugh with some of these “artists”. The harder they try, the less serious they should be taken. Someone like Bob Dylan has done more to damage “The Establishment” by speaking his mind intelligently and articulately than a dozen shock rockers could ever do.

“I used to be with it. But then what I was with, wasn’t it. And what is with it is scary and strange to me. It’ll happen to YOU!” --Grampa Simpson

Seriously though, I’m not some old fogey. I’m 21. Slipknot is a novelty band whose fans are looking for a way to announce how rebellious they all are. Do what my parents did–get the kid into YOUR music. To this day I still dig the Kinks, Randy Newman, David Bowie, etc. because my dad played them for me.

ElwoodCuse : by that token, I should be into Phil Collins, Meatloaf and Andrew Lloyd-Webber. Don’t make me come over there!

I sampled some Slipknot atTower Records and some of their stuff sounds like what you descirbe. Check out the (515) track.

Well, I can think of more egregious examples of prefabricated angst, but I can’t really argue with you on that.

Oh, look at us! We’re so badass! We’re being nice to Hitler!

GROAN!!!

YAWN!!!

slipknot is at least midly inovative musicaly.
some harmony and a good dose of Mr. Bungle tossed into and group of decent musicians.

I like em, of course I also like K.D. Lang

I guess I’m realy old. I cound’nt (and still can’t) stand Frank Sinatra!!!

Sorry to bring back the thread - but comparing slipknot to Mr. Bungle? I can’t let that slide!

Don’t make me come over there.
