new music

At least the guys MY DAD hated were talented. The Bands they’re throwing to the kids now, don’t have to meet that requirement. They just have to look cool, or cute. My son just reminded me about when I said “rap” wouldn’t be around long, but all the white kids in their FUBU shirts can’t get enough. Meanwhile legitimitely talented muscicians can’t get a song played anywhere except “Sessions at West 54th” or that kind of venue. I know it’s always been that way, but not to the degree it is now. Or am I too old?

Blame Carson Daly. I do.

Yeah!!!
I miss the golden age of popular music. The Sex Pistols, The Damned, G.G. Allin ,The Ramones!!!

I’m not kidding. I miss these guys.

Fr’chrissake. A thread was started on virtually this exact topic not even 12 hours before you posted, Randy. (Welcome to the SDMB, BTW.)
The Demise of Contemporary Music

If when I age, I start talking about how music these day’s is crap, I want you all to pormise ro kill me on the spot.

Thank you.

::dies of esctacy:: Someone LINKED to a thread I made. Oh golly gee…

And who says that rappers aren’t legitimately talented musicians?

That’s a stupid question Alpha. Isn’t in obvious? Randy said it. And of course he must be an expert.

I promise to kill you on the spot. Hey, backing you up is part of my job, right?

They are kinda on the borderline. They don’t sing a tune, they don’t play instruments, but if shouting obscene and self-agrandizing doggeral in a rhythmic manner is music, then I guess they do it.

says the man who obviously has very little knowledge of rap or hip-hop.

Ah. But if they are shouting obscene and self-agrandizing doggeral in a rhythmic manner while playing repetative guitar chords then they’re legitmate musicians. Hm.

Who do you listen to? Raffi?

Randy and dropzone, since rap doesn’t require musical talent, I eagerly await the release of your respective hip-hop albums.

Oh boy, I once again get to ride to the defense of modern music.

If you don’t like it, don’t listen to it. For what ever reason, some people do like it, and do listen to it. Too bad for you. It may not be the Beatles, but I guess you’ll just have live with the idea that “hey, sometimes things change”. Sheesh.

Yes, it has always been that way to the extent it is now. You just don’t remember the horrible music of the 1950’s, 60’s, and 70’s.

The following people actually won Grammy Awards in the 1970s: Olivia Newton-John, Captain and Tennille, Van McCoy (for “The Hustle,”) Debby Boone, Rickie Lee Jones, and Christopher Cross (remember him?) In 1976, the SONG OF THE YEAR was - get ready for this - “Send In The Clowns.”

“Send In the Clowns”? Olivia Newton-John? And these were the people good enough to win Grammies. Other pop music was so much worse.

FTR, the number one album on the Billboard Hot 100 album chart this week is by . . . the Beatles.

Theodore Sturgeon said it best: “90 percent of everything is crap.”

That means that 90% of what we hear today is garbage. THe bad outnumbers the good ten to one. But, What we remember from the past is the 10% that is the good stuff. We don’t remember the dreck we listened to.

BTW, I personally think Sturgeon was an optimist, it should actually be 99% of everything is crap.

rickie lee jones was one of the most talented musician songwriter vocalists… like …ever…
have you listened to her music? at least her first albums?
don’t ever put her in that group of losers-
i saw two of her live shows-both were GREAT, one done before she got sober and one after-
whatever the grammy was for, she deserved it-
and send in the clowns aint that bad a song either

Well, yes. (HAH! Thought I’d do my normal backpeddling, didn’t you?)

<singing>Baby Beluga, Baby Beluga…</singing>

I hope and pray that you did not just insult Lady in Red, one of the best prom songs ever.

Also, The Hustle was a pretty decent dance as well, and was almost single handedly responsible for the couples dancing revival of the late 70s.

As for rap, all I can say is that I long for the days of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince (none of this “Will Smith” crap), Vanilla Ice, Young MC, and (MC) Hammer. Now THOSE guys could bust a rhyme. These new guys are just obscene ripoffs. Word to your mother!

“If rhyme was a drug, I’d sell it by the gram.”
Now THOSE are lyrics.
