After replacing one of our two old computers with a new computer (Yes! :D) we replaced the other one with a used, but still slightly better computer. I was told that the cpu can go up to a Slot 1 Pentium III 933mhz.
As I was looking on eBay, I saw SLOT 1 to SOCKET 370 CONVERTER’s and was wondering two things.
How much of an improvement would it make?
I saw a CELERON 1.10-GHz SOCKET 370 PPGA CPU SL5XU. If I got the converter, would I be able to use the chip in the computer? I’m partially asking because, oddly enough, this chip http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3452918399&category=16180
cost less than most of the Socket 1 chips, and it’s faster than any Socket 1’s being sold on eBay too.
It probably won’t be supported. In addition to the change from slot to socket, the socket370 form factor underwent several revisions, each including a change in voltage specifications. Your motherboard supports Coppermine FCPGA-370 processors when using a slocket adapter. A Celeron 1.1Ghz is a Tualatin FCPGA2-370 processor, thus requires different voltages and won’t work except on motherboards using the Intel i815EP chipset.
What is the Model # of the computer? Have you checked the manufacturers site to confirm it will take the slotket and faster CPU? There also may be a BIOS upgrade that will allow the board to use faster CPUs. I think you need some more research to nail it down before purchasing.
