Smackover Arkansas USA. Know the Place?

This past weekend was the “Smackover Oil Town Festival”.

That got me to thinking, how many on here know about or have some connection to Smackover? I have never lived there, but my wife is from there. I grew up in the area though.

I have great memories of Smackover and make more constantly. I was just wanting to see how small this world really is.

If you don’t have a connection, start a thread about some other strangely named and obscure place. Maybe I as well as others have a connection there.

Only heard of it on anecdote from a good friend and teller of tall tales from Camden. Don’t recall him saying much good about it though.

I can find it, I like the area, have never been there, is that where Billy Bob Thornton comes from? If not, it should be.

My mom’s family is from Smackover and Norphlet. They worked in the surrounding oil fields starting in the 1920’s through the 60’s. My mom went to high school in Norphlet, her mom (my granny) and her mom’s sisters attended Smackover schools and worked there during WWII.

Both towns have lost a lot of their population and businesses since the 1960’s.

I’ve been through Arkadelphia, Hope, and Hot Springs but not Smackover.

Here’s the high school (on the right) and biggest church.

Although I’m more likely to hang around Dierks or DeQueen, or Rison; I’ve been to Smackover a few times. Even visited the museum.

I go through the region a lot. I have a deer lease roughly between Bear Bryant’s and Johnny Cash’s birthplace(s).

I’ve driven through there from Camden to El Dorado.

Cool, there are a few connections. At least some of you have heard of it. I went to high school at Fairview in Camden.

Someone mentioned the museum. Pretty decent museum for a small town.

Lot of fun times down in the oilfields that surround Smackover.

Neat place with a lot of history.

Also, Norphlet and the crater. Pretty neat.
