While Cecil’s post about why astrology is bunk is correct in conclusion, he does make one small error about how astrology ‘works’.
There are several different models, but most of them argue not that the planets directly affect you, rather that the universe works in repetitive cycles and that the planets are ‘clocks’, if you will, that you can use to determine where in the multitude of cycles we are.
Given that astrology was cooked up from observations of recurring events like the flood times for the Nile (which happened when Thuban and Sirius were at certain points in the sky at a specific time of night, back then), this isn’t THAT crazy an idea - even if they extended it far, far beyond anything that makes sense.
But hey - we’re good at that. Look at ‘trickledown economics’ and the myth of a perfect freemarket and the perfect consumer.
