Almost anything from the dollar store, but especially books, because you’d have to work very hard to write a book that I can’t get at least a dollar’s worth of enjoyment out of, and sunglasses.
I’m going with books, too. Especially music books, since that’s about the only books I’m into these days. But I’ve always gotten a cheap thrill with a new book. (I still get a little thrill over a library book, and I’m focusing more on them these days.)
It’s been a while since I bought a CD or cassette. Those were thrills, too. DVD’s would work nowadays for me, but I don’t go DVD shopping much since we use Netflix so much.
There was even a day when a calculator or some gizmo like that would work to perk me up.
Duct tape… Got me a fresh new roll of ‘duck tape’ and I feel ready for anything!
New underwear.
There’s nothing quite like wearing new underwear to make you feel spiffy.
There’s a blue glass vase thats sitting on top of one of my bookcases which gives me pleasure everytime I look at it. It only cost about $4.00 USD at Pier 1 Imports, but it’s given me far more than $4.00 worth of pleasure.
I’ll also buy myself flowers sometimes just for the pleasure of it.
This week’s special purpose was something different: gorgeous, soft yarn and size 7 double point needles which will transform that yarn into a hat, scarf, and mittens which perfectly suit my best friend. I think she’ll like her Christmans gift.

Fish.
Tiny little freshwater fish for the aquarium. Then I just sit and watch them for hours.

I’ll definitely second Mirror Image egamI rorriM on new underwear.
Gum. Buying a pack of Trident at the check-out thing always makes me happy…and not just right when I’ve bought it, but every time I take a stick.
CD’s, of course, but those are a “medium” purchase as they’re usually 18-20 bucks. Well, more expensive than gum, at any rate.
Nothing like a sleek little multi-pack of AA or AAA batteries.
New drumsticks. For you non-musicians, it’s like a writer getting a new pen or a cook getting new knives.
Er, make that ‘knife’. New knives would be comparable to something far greater.
Souls.
how 'bout that? i figured i was the lone adult that got all crazed by gel pens.
pens pens pens pens pens! the more different colors the ink is, the better! and since i’m also a fountain pen fetishist, just getting different color cartridges or bottles of ink is nearly as good. yes, office supply stores are Very Dangerous Territory. (for that matter, so is the school supplies aisle in WalMart.) i should not be allowed to visit them unaccompanied.
HA! got my own category on everyone, though. i have a pretty huge collection of < drumroll, please … > Post-It Notes! these aren’t the plain ol’ office yellow ones. when the cartooned/cute/funny sayings ones where very popular, i’d buy a pad of whatever tickled my funnybone. i must have close to a hundred different messages to choose from, on the rare occasions when i’ll actually use one of them for giving someone a note.
and books
and Dollar Stores
and candles
and any kind of nifty little toy/gadget/organizer.
get the feeling i’m a compulsive collector?
When I feel blue I buy myself flowers usually ones that smell nice like lillies.
Or I will go get myself a manicure & pedicure
I feel really rich if I can go out and buy undies
Anyone else get a terrible melancholia creep over them if you see something you can’t buy because you already have it? I saw Huck Finn in the “Classics for a quid” bit of a bookshop, one pound for a whole world of laddish pleasure? Damn, got it, (somewhere, godnose which pile or box). CDs used to do this to me a lot, but now that buying them feels like casting a vote for pure Evil I force myself not to browse record shops.
A new CD and it turns out to have all good tracks on it.
New books, especially one that becomes a lengthy and pleasurable read for a lazy afternoon.
My Saturday morning would never be complete without my iced mocha.
New socks are good, too.
Audrey, I’m nuts about Glade candles, too. Last night I ran out to the store for a few things while in a sort of funk, so I treated myself to a Glade candle. Err, candles. In French Vanilla and Sweet Nothings. And, um, one in Mango Splash. And an In Style magazine. And a Cosmo… Overindulgent? Me? I don’t know what you’re talking about. Hey, it was a long day at work.
In the summer, a treat may be a new pair of flip flops from the dollar store. (“Hmmm, I’ve got red, and yellow with red stripes, but not red with yellow polka dots…”) During school I’ll treat myself with new pens and binders, but mostly that’s just to motivate myself to study. It’s so much easier to recopy your lecture notes when you can color-code them!
And on the higher end of the price spectrum, I thrilled myself a few weeks ago by breaking down and buying a set of pasta pots (the kind where the lid serves as a strainer). Oh my goodness, I become giddy every time I use them. I didn’t know it was possible to derive so much joy from making Kraft macaroni and cheese.
