small riddle

I saw this riddle in a book, and wanted to see who could come up with the answer first.
A young man wanted to marry a fair maiden. Her father, however, did not want this. So he offered the man a choice. He was to pick 1 of 2 pieces of paper out of a hat.
One piece was to say death, the other marriage. Whiochever one he picked, he would get.
The girl, however, noticed that both pieces of paper said death, as her father wanted him dead.
Yet the young man married her after all. How did he get around this problem?

He picked a piece of paper and ate it, then said “Now read the one that’s left in the hat.”

It said “Death,” which meant that the one he ate had to say “Marriage.”

Well, I guess That was the shortest thread ever…you smart guy you…

Just wanted this thread to beat the length of my all-time shortest thread.

Which one was that, Chief?

What? No “Magician’s Choice”?

Just had to post in the thread with Riddle in the title…

Hmph.

I was going to say the young man eviscerated the father, shoved both pieces of paper into his steaming guts, and fed him to the wild animals. He then took over the house, land and cattle, married the daughter and lived happily ever after.

Yours makes a better riddle, mine makes a better movie.
