It’s the right thing to do. I’d only encountered Smapti tangentially before, hadn’t really tried to discuss things with him (unless I’ve forgotten something). I was gobsmacked at his gyrations to defend the indefensible. He’s a fucking idiot.

Exactly. THIS IS the Smapti thread. If I have a comment about Smapti, there’s no better place to put it. Pit threads aren’t epic stories with a beginning, middle, and end, requiring some kind of elaborate justification for tacking on another comment.
It seems a little dubious to revive a thread that has been dead for two months just to say: “You guys are still falling for this guy’s shtik.”
If he had something of more sustenance to say, that would make more sense.
