A few years back, “smart” drugs were the rage. Maybe they still are, but I haven’t run into them. Are there any drugs, perscription or not, that have been shown to increase memory, retention, etc. in people without any medical problems in those areas? I think some omega acids were alleged to have some such property, but I don’t know if that’s proven or just part of the effect it has on people with depression, etc.
Having a quick look around google it seems that there are still many drugs that supposedly increase memory or logical thought but the actual evidence for such claims is elusive. One website (I forget which) indicated that surveys done thus far were conflicting, some claiming and improvement and some stating the drugs made no difference whatsoever. The website also stated that these studies were not of the highest scientific standard and so far no rigorous testing had been done of the effect of such drugs on healthy people.
One theme running throughout the sites I browsed is that if you want a sure-fire way to improve your brain function then here it is: Plenty of vegetables, fresh fruit and exercise. I know that isn’t what most people want to hear when looking for a quick fix solution but that seems to be the case
as said… the research is conflicting. Generally, they are only immediately
useful in the elderly or cognitively impaired. Most of the substances are better as prophylactics; limiting the extent of brain damage from a stroke, environmental toxins, etc…
