Smash -- Season 2

I’d heard good things about the performer, so maybe he’s capable of more? Also, I can’t imagine the lines and story being played any other way (in contrast to Karen, who could have been a better character had she been played by a better actress.) That said, he’s not rising above the horrible writing.

It was nice to see Kyle finally grow a pair and stand up to Jimmy. Briefly.

I have to admit that the “falling, baby, through the sky” song is catchy. It’s been an earworm for a few days.

And Anna stand up to Karen, who’s taken on Jimmy’s whininess and self absorbtion.

Ooh, good catch. Didn’t get that point.
Yeah, the actors coming from the aisles bothered me, too.

LOVED the new gunshot opening on Hit List, though. Gives the title a double-entendre. Hit List as a rocking song, and Hit List as a mob gangster’s order of killing folk.

I’m really not caring about Jimmy’s Dark Past, but I know it’ll be a plot point for keeping him out of some awards show or something.

I don’t know why they were so upset with Julia’s three-day Dramaturg for Hit List. She wasn’t doing anything anyway! Bah.

That didn’t make sense to me, either, especially since he knew she’s been hanging with Hit List’s producer and playwright.

It seemed more like a “but you are my partner, you can’t do stuff by yourself” type of tantrum. Though likely was just an emotional response due to Bombshell getting slammed (though I was like c’mon Eileen - you can’t expect to magically sway the reviews because you were dating the newspaper columnist, and treated a date with him as a way to score some pub for your musical).

I did think the two second Ellis cameo was funny.

I laughed.

So now we know the big secret with brat asshole, and it wasn’t much of a big deal - boo hoo, daddy was a bad daddy and he and his brother had to raise themselves and they dealt drugs and did bad things…big whoop. He is still an obnoxious prick.

Bombshell opening was decent - and some nice snippets from the show. In real life, this would probably be a decent show with decent reviews (as portrayed) and maybe run long enough to get their money back and turn a profit.

If there should, by some miracle, be another season - I guess that means we get to see The Great Gatsby. According to this article, NBC shouldn’t be so quick to pull the trigger and cancel the show just yet…

It did piss me off that my local Cox Cable had the show listed for 9:00 pm - but thanks to you guys warning me from last week, I DVR’d “The Voice” at 8:00 PM and, sure enough, it was indeed Smash.

Though it doesn’t explain why he has no SSN and has to be paid him in cash (which, incidentally, no producer would ever do).

The most irritating things with this episode were:

-Kyle doesn’t feel like going to tend to Jimmy for a change so leaves to hook up with Tom, which would be fine except that this particular time Jimmy being distraught and in need of tending is Kyle’s fault; likewise, Karen never gives him a second to explain when she comes in on the end of an episode.

-The Great Gatsby would be a major commitment that takes years and I would guess a very expensive one as well (buying the rights and all) yet Julia is pissed that Tom doesn’t want to give an immediate commitment. When he changes his mind, she’s still p.o.d. This is probably why he became gay to begin with: not having to put up with feminine mood swings.

That article is from 6 weeks ago, before NBC moved *Smash *to Saturdays. Last night’s ratings for *Smash *had it at 0.4 in the 18-49 demo and 1.9 million viewers. Granted, you can’t expect big numbers on Saturday nights, but that’s still very low. Reruns of The Mentalist and *Castle *got better numbers than that last night. There will be no miracle renewal for Smash.

As far as last night’s episode, this ongoing Jimmy/Karen “drama” would have killed the show if it hadn’t already been DOA this season. Just really horrible writing and acting by all involved there.

Ivy and Julia’s characters are much better recently. Both are much more sympathetic and likable, though Julia’s redemption is coming at the expense of Tom. Still, it’s an interesting dynamic.

Hilty sounded great in that Marilyn song, and the duet with Hilty and McPhee was fun. McPhee is actually not bad in Karen’s scenes with Ivy.

The Great Gatsby, huh? Were the *Smash *producers and writers hoping to feed on some of the interest generated by the upcoming *Gatsby *movie directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Leo DiCaprio?

Didn’t watch this till last night – geez louise, it just keeps getting worse and worse. If only the writers had a, whaddya call 'em … dramaturg.

Hint: When the big reveal comes about a character’s dark secret – it has to involve some element of surprise. “Daddy was an asshole” isn’t a surprise.

I’ve always wanted to see City of Angels. I love “With Every Breath I Take.” I also think the idea of it would make a good movie musical with the right director & cast.

Other than that, “Don’t Forget Me” is still an idiotic song (Hilty nailed it, but the song is stupid). I wish we could have seen a little more of the show. And the idea that both shows are going to the Tonys is silly. But there are only a very few episodes left to suffer through.

My high school did City of Angels, a few years before the movie “City of Angels”(no relation). Ever since I’ve also wanted to see it done professionally.

I’m typically more a fan of the McPhee body type than the Hilty body type, but Ivy looked fantastic in that Marilyn dress during the closing number. Really fantastic.

Oh my god, they killed Kyle!

You bastards!

Hee!

Julia can’t work on GATSBY with Tom because she’s promised (Jesse L. Martin’s character) the play.

Um, why doesn’t she just tell (JLM’s character) it’s now a Tom & Julia musical, which, since he already said he needs a major hit and they’re a bankable duo, he’d probably love to have?

In our house, we consider Kim Jong Un of North Korea, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran and Kathy Lee Gifford to be the most obnoxiously insane people on the planet.

We should have known this was going to be a bad episode when it opened with Kathy Lee wearing a Marilyn costume.

Brat asshole songwriter/lead became druggie/drunk brat asshole…gee, whodaseen that coming? And being fired from his own show? In real life he would never have even gotten that far.

Speaking of throwing up the proverbial free lunch, Tom and Julia decide to air their dirty laundry in a public interview. There have been/are lots of creative teams who loathe each other in private, but even they can still play nice in public…it is called professionalism. This was just stupid.

And now it looks like they have killed [del]Kenny[/del] Kyle …geez, can you rip off the real story of Rent any more?

I was sort of sad to see Smash go - but this episode was so horribly written that I think it is time they simply smush Smash.

Just like people who can’t turn away from watching the train wreck, I will continue to watch the last episodes. But now I am more inclined to hope all of the writers are on that train when it happens.

And does anybody know the plot of Hit List. Near as I can tell

*Boy meets girl
*Boy loses girl
*Girl becomes star
*Diva shoots girl

But it’s edgy.
