SmashTheState: You have some of the dumbest politics around. Your posts indicate a tendency towards anarchy, along with overwhelmingly naive ideas about how the world works and how it should work. For example, your accusation that I must be some sort of whale meat connoisseur because I think Paul Watson is a fucking moron is outlandish and insulting.
I can imagine the world as you see it, where everyone is accepting of differences and good at heart, and we all cooperate while singing Kumbayah, growing organic food and living in harmony with nature. I can also imagine the world about a year after that, where someone who isn’t quite so in tune gathers up a gang of people and murders and enslaves you and all of your fruitbag hippie friends, and burns down your tent city (which might remove the stench of patchouli).
Of course, you will probably not be around since you will be in prison for striking back at the man in some sort of egregiously overcomplicated and yet strikingly ineffective direct action against the establishment which results in tragedy for some innocent prole workers, and is nothing more than a momentary blip on the radar of the rich and wealthy.
BUT…
I admire your dedication to your ideals and the amount of effort you spend finding cites for your information.
The problem, as you pointed out (though a little ineptly) is that the SDMB is full of people who think they are intellectually elite. Woe betide he who dares to dispute the sacred memes of the SDMB! Differences between races? Confirmation bias! Religion? Refuge of the mentally imbalanced! Conservatives? Hopped up trailer trash who hate people! People who have non-mainstream views? Sociopathic troll threadshitters!
The SDMB has a few people who add insightful commentary and keep an open mind. It has a few people who are complete fucking idiots. Some people post snarky attention-whoring one liners, and others bash out long rants for fun and to get a rise out of the people they not-so-secretly despise.
But the majority of people on here are smug hangers-upon whose sole duty is to indicate their agreement with the forum consensus, thus propping up their vulnerable inner self. Whining about the unfairness of the job market or whatever little domestic drama they had in the line at the grocery store, or filling GQ with citeless misinformation (after all, you are all experts!). People who seriously contend that people in the middle ages never got a VD. I’d love a time machine to send you ponytailed SCA fatbodies back in time with your cobbled-together armor and dispell your romantic notions of the age of heroes once and for all.
Of course, none of those things are more than mere annoyances. What is worse is the tendency of the witless minions to make the same old boring attacks on those they disagree with, without bothering to actually take the argument by the horns and come back with something meaningful. But why do that when you can simply dogpile someone and constantly remind everyone that said person is an asshole, a conservative, a crazy conspiracy whackjob, an objectivist, or plain old troll?
So, while SmashTheState is completely wrong on a lot of things, and tends toward a certain world viewpoint, before you hit that little button to say so, maybe you should look at your own worthless posts and realize that while it takes balls to hop on a board full of self-proclaimed MENSA members (mostly fugly nerds in real life) and set out your views in the face of overwhelming opposition, it is nothing but pathetic to be one of the peanut gallery numbskulls who don’t contribute anything but shallow ad hominems or parroting whatever counterintuitive one-upping idée du jour is currently in favor on the SDMB.
I’d certainly rather hear SmashTheState talk about DDT or RandRover tell me how charity is poison than read more boring posts from fuzzy-thinking self-assured dipshits who think that their common sense and what they think they remember from some thread in GQ or that movie they saw last summer are a substitute for actually knowing something.
