Smelly Dog

We have a 14 year old Lhasa Apso. He’s a bit stiff in the joints but otherwise in apparent good health but he STINKS!
His coat and skin are perfectly clean and the smell does not appear to emanate from an orifice. Everyone in our house would be grateful if someone can suggest a remedy.

Is is safe to assume from this that you’ve already tried bathing him?

Even if smell doesn’t appear to be coming from any specific place, I’ve heard that yeasty ears can make the whole dog seem stinky.

Have you cleaned his ears really well?

The dog is perfectly clean in all parts but THE SMELL persists. It doesn’t appear to be from his mouth, his ears, his nostrils or his bum and his coat and skin are clean. His eyes too are clean. He is not receiving any medication. His bowel motions are normal and appear to be healthy. He is not excessively flatulent but, in any case, it is not that sort of smell.

Could he have a bladder or urinary tract infection? My dog, an 11-year-old golden retriever, develops a weird smell when she has such problems.

What did your vet say about this?

yes, check with the vet. Our dog had a vaginitis. Treating that with topical betadine was no fun. She kept licking it, and eventually we had to put a cone on her head for two weeks.

What do you feed your dog?

Our dogs smell so much better now they are on a good diet.

I recall reading somewhere that that “doggy” smell is a result of a persistent skin fungus. I gather it is rather common as many people seem to complain of the infamous “wet dog smell”. I would hazard a guess that an old dog with this fungus may smell worse than a young dog. Apparently this fungus needs to be treated with some sort of meds from a vet. Have you checked that out?

yeasty ears on a dog can be down right Foul. thats all I can add other than to agree about the vet thing.
