Well, my impression, based on fuller videos and reporting, is that it really started by one very conservative and anti-abortion black group (the very loopy Black Hebrew Israelites) were there to join the rally. After seeing the back on forth on this issue, it is clear to me that right wing sources of information rarely did touch on why those guys where there because it would mean that finding that they have such loopy groups supporting antiabortion causes would not be helpful to their narrative.
What the MAGAT students found is that while the BHI would agree with the anti-abortion crusade, the arch religious group just did not tolerate that the symbols of an adulterer and possibly a guy that asked past partners to do the thing that they were protesting about.
Hence the very offensive taunts from the Black Hebrew Israelites directed to the clueless students. And then we had the most common clips of the following confrontation that got royally Rashomoned to death by different sources.
The point here, is that yeah, donning that hat is offensive to many on the left; but as I noted, many on the right do act is if it is/was not offensive to some conservatives also.

Nicholas Sandmann reaches settlement with NBC in Covington Catholic High School controversy
“At this time I would like to release that NBC and I have reached a settlement,” wrote Sandmann on Twitter, adding that the terms were confidential.

A federal judge struck the cases filed by Sandmann against The New York Times, CBS News, ABC News, NBC Universal Media, Rolling Stone, and Gannett on Tuesday, court documents show.
