I’m a long-time subscriber to Smithsonian Magazine. Please, keep your awe and admiration to yourself.
I could have sworn (and I do, often and to no effect) that earlier this year in one of their magazines I had seen an advertisement for yearly binders for the magazine. Now these are not the standard, generic ones you see in the library. These were specific binders which would have held a years worth of issues and were imprinted on the front with “Smithsonian Magazine” and the year.
However now, having gone through a few years worth of issues looking for it again, I cannot find it. And I was sure they had a website that was something along the lines of “smithsonianbinders.com” or something of that ilk, but God, in his infinite whimsey, has taken away from me the ability to find it.
Okay … then … so … does anyone else remember seeing this anywhere? Or am I just nuts? And if I am just nuts, is it for this reason or is there something else going on that I should know about?
There used to be a company that partnered with all the magazines and sold just this item - a magazine binder whose size, capacity, color and front logo were exactly what was needed for a year of the magazine. Used to see them all the time in many magazines. Haven’t for years.
You might be able to find the actual supplier and order “exact fit” binders directly.
My library has a subscription to Smithsonian and we keep a year back; when I get a few I’ll go flip through and see what I can turn up. Most likely won’t be able to update til later tonight or tomorrow.
I remember that as well. I can’t remember the name of that company, but I did a Google search for the Smithsonian binders. I couldn’t find it, but did find sites selling imprinted binders for other magazines (Playbill, for one but there were others). So perhaps that company is still out there?
I was trying to remember the name of that company, so I just went through some back issues of various magazines on Google Books (which includes a bunch of magazines, including all of the ads). I think the company was Jesse James Industries.
I get it too, and it’s the bathroom reading so by the time the new one comes every article has been read. And all the ads. (And into the recycling it goes.)
But I will continue to look as well. I love that magazine. It’s the only one I actually subscribe to.
